Work Email

Do you check work-related email when you're at home?  I do, sometimes too much, but I often have meetings and events in the evening too.  DH is really good about not bringing work home though.

Re: Work Email

  • Not usually. There isn't much I can do from home since I'm in research and for anything related to the lab manager part of my job requires me to log into the system which I can only do from work.

  • Yes, I'm glued to my blackberry and pretty much expected to respond to emails and have my laptop with me at all times. We call it the "leash" around the office. I've gotten much better over the past year/ two years at not letting the pressure get to me though, so even though I check the emails and respond if it's very urgent, for the most part, I let it go till morning or after the weekend is over.
  • When I was working, yes, I checked.  In my industry it's pretty much expected that you're always at least semi-available and I've had a "leash" almost my entire career.  Just comes with the territory.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I do, but only because my work email is also what I consider my formal email (those of you who know my personal email understand!) so I use it for more than just work. But I am also not in a typical work situation - my work email is a live.com account (hotmail).

  • I check work email on a day off or if I'm home sick and probably once during the weekend. It's not imperative for me to check it and there is no need for me to have a blackberry to access it!
  • Well...I work from home...generally 730-530 but tonight I caught myself looking at email thru 630. I turn my blackberry off at 530 though, no matter what. I hate getting late phone calls.

You have to take into account that I have now 2 rescue jobs (used to be just 1, but I guess I needed more to do) so I work a lot in the evenings on just that.

  • I didn't used to, but recently I've been on a project that has me working more hours so I usually check it once a night at home and once or twice on the weekend.

  • Unfortunately I have put my work email on my iPhone, and I do find myself checking it at home... which I really need to stop doing.
  • I check at home if I sent something out at the end of the day and want to see if anyone responded, or if we've got a deadline coming up.  Sometimes I check it just because I'm bored.

This.  I also checked it the minute I got home from my honeymoon because I was paranoid there was going to be layoffs while I was gone and I wanted to make sure I could still access my account/not laid off.

  • Yes. I do.  I used to do it more.  I got burned once when a parent sent me a scathing e-mail in the middle of the night about something I had done (when I hadn't done anything wrong ... it just wasnt what she wanted me to do).  Now I limit my checking and will usually only check when I know I should have something coming in that I might need more time to prep for than I will have if I wait til I get to work.
