need to exchange a gift - wwyd?

My SILs hosted a great baby shower for me when we were visiting last weekend.  95% of the people there I had never met.  One of those ladies (longtime friend of MIL) got me the most beautiful baby carrier but it's not my size and there was no gift reciept or order info with it.

I want to exchange it but I don't have any local stores that carry the Serena & Lily brand so I will need to do via an online website and will probably need some sort of order confirmation.

Should I:

call my mother in law and have her call her friend.  MIL has a strange knack for making things more difficult than they need to be, but I think I can convince her that I merely want an exchange and DO love the carrier...

or should I write a thank you to the friend right away and suggest that I need a larger size (inquire where she purchased it from)?

do you think I would have any luck contacting S&L directly to request an exchange? (there is a customer service number on their website and they do have online sales)

Re: need to exchange a gift - wwyd?

  • I would probably try to contact S&L first to exchange it directly with them and if it doesn't work out, then I'd try to get the contact info (if you don't have it already) for your MIL's friend. That way, I can call the friend directly to thank her again for the carrier, stress how much I love it, and ask her where I'd be able to exchange it for a larger size. But I think that contacting S&L directly should work out so I'd do that first =) Just my 2 cents! GL!

  • I would:  (1) first try to exchange directly through S&L (although I'm not super confident it would work); then (2) write very sweet note gushing about how much you love it but expressly stating that you need to exchange it for a larger size).

I'd try to keep MIL out of the way.  :p

  • thanks!  I really hoped to leave MIL out of it, but didn't know if it was odd to try to work this out with her friend directly.

Who knows, maybe I will be able to get the exchange done directly, but I am thinking she probably ordered from some specialty online shop (not S&L directly).

I tend to agree. Going through S&L would be ideal, but if it doesn't work out, you probably don't have much choice other than to contact the giver - just make sure that you state how much you love it, etc., so she knows you genuinely just do need a different size.

  • Oooooh, which S&L carrier? What size? I want to get one!!!!!

She gave me a medium (which won't even work for me height wise, not even accounting for weight/clothes sizeSad).  Even if she knew it came in sizes I'm not sure she would have been able to guess since she has never met me...

I really wanted a ring sling (probably sakura bloom) but I think the one I got as a gift is beautiful and it's really soft inside.  In the right size I think it will probably work well  :)

  • Gorgeous! I want either that one of the tan or cloud market one. My friend has the green one. So jealous! I think I'd need a small tho, or I'd totally buy it from you!

Have you tried contacting the company directly? Just call them and say you got the sling as a gift and not sure where it was purchased from, but it's brand new and you just would like to exchange it for another size? Might be something to try BEFORE you ask the lady......
