Taking sick leave while on EI??
I'm confused. My HR manager told me this, so I assume it's correct, but thought I'd see if my online epxerts know anything about it 
She said that I can take my sick time after I start my leave. She said sick time/ sick leave pay is not deducted from my mat leave, like vacation time would be.
Did I interpret this correctly?

I'm not sure... taking sick leave on mat leave doesn't make sense to me.
I.e. if you're sick for 2 weeks of your mat leave, does that mean you can extend your leave to 54 weeks instead of the regular 52? It doesn't make sense to me.
I know for my work I accumulate vacation time while on mat leave though, which I can tack on to the end of my mat leave if I want. i.e. I could take my 3 weeks for the year and essentially be off for 55 weeks if I wanted to.
I would ask her to clarify. Have people at your work gone off on work recently? I find if no one's gone off recently the HR people aren't always as up to scratch on the specifics as maybe they could be...
I know you can take sick leave BEFORE your mat leave. My friend was on bedrest from something like 21 weeks until she delivered at 35 weeks and that time was not deducted from her mat leave.
Never heard of doing it after your mat leave starts. That doesn't make sense to me.
Okay, I think I understand now. I have 8,5 sick days, so according to Service Canada, I can be paid for those during my two week waiting period and it will not affect the waiting period or be deducted once I start receiving payments. Here's what it said:
In some instances, the 2-week waiting period may be waived or deferred, but only under certain circumstances, for examples:
* If you get paid sick leave pay from your employer following your last day worked, the waiting period may be waived;
