XP: Garage Sale

I have never done a garage sale before so I have no idea what will sell and what typically doesn't.  Our neighborhood is doing a neighborhood-wide garage sale, though, where each person sets up in their driveway/lawn.

We're doing a huge deep cleaning this weekend...including cleaning out closets and getting rid of some things in our storage unit (that were a product of H and I combining two fully furnished houses).

A few things I plan to put out: 27" (non-HD, flat screen but not flat panel) TV, Nintendo Game Cube, old dresser of H's that would probably need to be refinished, ugly blue leather arm chair of H's, and a boat load of my old clothes that are in good condition but I never wear

Thoughts?  Are those worth dealing with and putting out for a garage sale?  Do clothes and shoes typically sell if they are in good condition?

Re: XP: Garage Sale

  • My SIL and I just had a garage sale, we both just recently got married and so we had a lot of stuff (Her more than me).  TVs went fast here, electronics usually do well.  Our old kitchen stuff went well if you have that.  I didn't do any clothes this time because I didn't feel like messing with it but last time we had a garage sale I put out clothes and they went extremely well (though they were mostly DHs).  Hope that helps and good luck!!
  • It generally depends on your area.  In my hometown, you can sell almost anything if it is priced right.  Where I live now clothes don't sell well but electronics, furniture, and sporting goods go really well.  Unless they are name brand clothes, you may be better off donating them for a tax write off though.

  • We made about $200 on our last sale. Put furniture and other big things at the end of the driveway to attrach people, especially since it's the whole neighborhood and people might skip over some.

Clothing will sell but price it cheap. Name brands go the best. Don't expect to get more than 15-30% of what you paid for the items.

Good luck, let us know how it goes!

  • At our yard sale, the furniture, electronics, and kitchen stuff sold the best. I would definitely put out the bigger items. We got rid of a lot of clothes, but for almost nothing. We probably would have gotten more on them as a tax write-off.
