Poll: Housekeeper?

Do you have someone who comes in and cleans?

If so, have you had that person for long time? Do you make sure you're not home when he/she comes?

If not, do you have a cleaning schedule? Do you want one?

Anything else you'd like to add?

Re: Poll: Housekeeper?

  • we clean our own house... no schedule, with me still in school there isnt really a schedule for anything, so it just gets done when it gets done!
  • I have had someone come and clean a few times.

She also used to clean for other family members and she cleans at my work office. M's family has known her for at least 8 years.  She comes to clean and we just leave so she can do her thing.

We only have her clean the kitchen, bathroom, livingroom, and diningroom.  If I want her to come out I usually just call her or talk to her when she cleans our office.

It's great to have! I love having her come out and really clean everything up. She does an amazing job and worth every penny!

  • Considering my mostly SAHW status, it would be ridic for me to have one.

  • I'm pretty sure both my husband and my mother would think I was a complete failure as a wife if I hired a cleaning lady.  Not trying to say there is anything wrong with having one for those of you who do, it would just never fly in my life.
  • We have absolutely no time to do deep cleaning. I have no problem keeping the house tidy, but I don't feel like it's as clean as I'd like it to be. I've wanted a housekeeper for a long time, but Mike says we can't justify it since we live in a one bedroom apt. Once we move though, we're definitley getting one. Most of my friends have housekeepers, so we'll probably see what each of them pays and what they have done for the cost and then decide from there. We're also getting a gardener when we move, primarily because the landlord requires it. A maid and a gardener - sounds so posh! :)
  • We have someone who comes in. She has been working for C's family for over 20 years and he hired her to come in twice a month when he got his place.

I think it's kind of nuts that she comes right now since I'm home (although I am working), but C really doesn't want to take the income away from her.

Neither one of us is a neat freak by any stretch of the imagination so it is great having her come in.

That being said, since I feel so guilty about it, I usually head out when she's here. But, today I'm home since I really want to finish my revisions.

  • I actually love to clean, but I only get to do a full house cleaning (bathrooms, vacuum, kitchen floor, mirrors/glass, dust, etc.) probably about every 2-3 weeks with my crazy work schedule. We don't have the money for a cleaning person/company, but once we're older and we have kids it might be something we'd be more interested in.

  • We don't have any body that cleans for us.  I do all the cleaning.  I try to fit it in whenever I have time.
  • Do you have someone who comes in and cleans? No, but i want one and will have one when we can afford it. Embarrassingly, i always had one growing up, so i never had to clean anything, just keep it picked up. Then in college i lived in the sorority house and we had a full time housekeeper as well. I legit had no idea how to clean at all when we got married. DH had to teach me everything and makes so much fun of me because i didn't know a thing.

If so, have you had that person for long time? Do you make sure you're not home when he/she comes? n/a

If not, do you have a cleaning schedule? Do you want one? Yes. During the summer (aka, not during school), i cleaned every Wednesday. during the school year, DH and I clean together either every friday or every sunday dependign on whether we have company in town for the weekend. We do light cleaning every day as we go.

Anything else you'd like to add?
  • You guys are so much cleaner than me and so organized with your schedules!  I just clean things when they get dirty.  I get no help from DH, but he never complains either, so it's basically all up to me and what I think needs doing.  Which is usually nothing.
  • We have a cleaning lady who comes in once a month while we're at work. I wish we could afford to have her come more often, but it's not in the budget for now. She's been cleaning our house for the past 2 years. DH and I both work more than the typical 40-hour workweek, so we really struggle to keep the house clean. We try to do light cleaning together on the weekends, but if we have weekend plans, cleaning tends to fall by the wayside for that week.

  • I use to have a cleaning lady before I met DH. It was awesome! I always left when she came. I didn't want to be around and watch someone else clean my house.

We currently don't have a housekeeper. There are weeks when I wish we did and there are weeks when it would be ridiculous to pay someone to clean. As of now, we usually clean every Sunday together. We like making sure everything is ready for the week ahead.

  • Wow! It would be awesome to have a housekeeper! But I also am not a fan of being inconvenienced, so I don't know how I'd handle having to leave the house at a certain time each week. The kids schedules just vary from day to day, I don't like to force us to be somewhere if we don't have to.

I typically clean the entire house every Thursday (today--woohoo! not.) And I usually vacuum and clean the kitchen every other day. It's really mind-boggling how fast the house gets trashed. And disheartening. But I am not complaining! I am grateful to have a house to clean and products with which to clean! :)

  • Do you have someone who comes in and cleans?
Yes, but only once a month right now. I think we'll upgrade to twice a month once we have children

If so, have you had that person for long time? Do you make sure you're not home when he/she comes?
Our "cleaning lady" as she calls herself, is the wife of one of my employees. I have know them both for about 3 years. I love her and trust her fully with my home. They even watch the house for us, take care of the cats, and bring in the mail when we're away.
She always comes to clean while I am at work. We all perfer it that way.
She's great, she even calls me at work when she has a question about something.

If not, do you have a cleaning schedule? Do you want one?
When it's not "cleaning lady week" at our house I typically clean on Thursdays or Sundays. Although I do pickup/ dust and vacuum every day or every other day. It helps cut down on the cat hair.

Anything else you'd like to add? I wish Mary, our cleaning lady, could come every day. I hate to clean.

  • No housekeeper...would love to have one even if it was just once or twice a month to do deep cleaning of shower, toilets, floors, etc.

No cleaning schedule.  I'm not a neat freak, but I also reach a point where I get claustrophobic in clutter.  H has a habit of leaving his clothes all over our bedroom floor, doing laundry and leaving clothes laid out on the guest bed next to the laundry room, etc.

This weekend we are doing a massive deep cleaning of the entire house - it has gotten out of control.  I'm also planning on buying a couple of hampers and trying to enforce the clutter-free style.  I'm so sick of walking around clothes all over the floor of our bedroom!!

Luckily, as previously mentioned we're having a neighborhood garage sale next weekend, so hopefully we'll be able to eliminate a lot of crap and throw it out for the garage sale!

Do you work FT? Does your husband? Why would it be a failure as a wife if you got help cleaning? Wouldn't it be a failure of you two AS A COUPLE? I just can't believe these attitudes are still out there.

I totally get that if one person is SAHing it makes sense for them to do the bulk of the work, but when both are working FT, all bets are off in my book.

PS. I'm not saying it IS a failure to have cleaning help- I fully plan to hire someone as soon as we can afford/justify the expense. I'm just saying if it were a failure, it better damn well be a failure on both sides, not just yours!
