Probably a stupid question...

DH and I were trying to use our gas fireplace for the first time yesterday (an evasion to trying to turn on the heat!).  How the heck do you light these things?!  We turned the key to turn on the gas line, pushed what seemed like a pilot button inside the fireplace, and flipped a switch that seemed to turn on the ventilation...am I missing something or is there a special sequence?

Re: Probably a stupid question...

  • Does it need to be serviced?  There were a few times that we absolutly could not get our furnace on and we had to call someone out.  We weren't clueless, there really was something wrong with the furnace/pilot light.  Sometimes you actually have to light the piliot light but that's usually for really old, really basic stoves.  I had to do this with my first apartment stove and it was a PITA.  I've never had a gas fireplace but considering that your houe isn't that old the fireplace should light on it's own.

  • I don't have a suggestion but I want you to know that it's not a stupid question.  I think the first time I used my gas fireplace when my house was new, I couldn't figure it out for the life of me.  I've had to get someone to come out from the fireplace company at least twice in the 8 years I've been in this house. Makes me feel like a moron each time but it just befuddled me!

So...I'm no help but you're not alone.  Wink

  • I don't have an answer just a thought.  My Mom's is an open fireplace where you turn the gas on and just hold a lighter over the logs until it lights.  But my Dad's fireplace is enclosed by glass and I have no idea how it all works there we just simply flip a light switch and it comes on.  GL
  • Our fireplace is gas and it is glass enclosed.  My husband turns the key to turn on the gas then lowers the grill below the glass on the front of the fireplace and uses a lighter to light the pilot light.  Then we hit the button to actually start the fire and turn on the fan.  HTHs
  • I am not sure how my FI got it to work I just know the pilot light is always light and he just hits a switch and its on !! :) Our next door neighbor actually had to help us the first time .
