The S-Word

Ooookay, one of my friends who lives in Indie says her weatherman said the s-word yesterday during the forecast for Monday.  Snow?  Already???  Now, duh, that's a few hours away, but still ....

I haven't been through a full winter here yet, so can someone from around here (I live in Fairborn) please tell me when to expect the first good snow of the year, approximately?

Re: The S-Word

  • Usually the first good snow hits in late December/early January.  It's possible to get an ice storm or some sleet though.  I was in 7th grade in 1987 and a huge ice storm came through around the middle of October.  We were off of school-not for the snow but b/c everything was covererd with ice (trees, powerlines, etc) and people didn't have power.  I hope you and DH don't have to go anywhere in the City of Dayton during a storm.  The city never plows our neighborhood streets and does a cruddy job on the main roads.  I hope that Fairborn does a better job!

  • Heh, DH commutes 1/2 an hour each way, but he is from New Hampshire originally and is quite used to driving in unplowed conditions.  So no biggie.  I work from a home office, so my commute is around 10 steps each way.  :)

  • Yeah, ditto PPs. But it is possible to get a random snow early.

I remember one Halloween school was closed for snow (not the ice storm daves_sweetpea mentioned). Actual snow. But to have them that early is few and far between.

We usually get the first good snow in December-ish timing, but I think it tends to be worse around February.

Oh, and around here the problem tends to not be the pure snow, but that it's usually accompanied by some ice, which makes the roads horrendous.
  • Short of the Blizzard we had a few years ago in March, I don't think it's the snow around here that is so bad, it's the drivers who make such a big deal out of it and just don't use their head in the snow. I have lived in Cincy all my life and I wish we got more snow... I LOVE IT! Most of the "big" snow storms come in Jan-Feb but we do get an inch or so every now and then in late Nov. and December.

  • They mentioned it on FOX this morning. I think they were talking about sometime this weekend or early next week?
