Refinish Hardwood floors?

I have one room in my house that I'm considering pulling up the carpet and refinishing the hardwood floors. How expensive to you think it would be to have one room done? Thanks!

Re: Refinish Hardwood floors?

  • I know a few people here have hired people.  I did our dining room myself.  It's not bad, just dusty, but getting the varnish right is a pain.  I say go for the professional!

  • We just did exactly what you are thinking. We pulled up the carpet in the living room, dining room, hallway and 2 small bedrooms and had the floors sanded down and refinished with 3 coats of poly and they replaced the toe strip and threasholds to match. I think it was probably about 900 square feet...maybe 1,000 and the price was $1500 CASH! They took off a few hundred bucks when we offered to pay them in cash. I think they have a minimum price though, so I am not sure what they would charge for just one room.

DH is the one who found the guy and etc.. but I know they work all over the place so if you want their information let me know and I will get it from him. I am happy with the job they did. I think it looks really good! I went with the darker stain, they tried to talk me out of it since the house is small and they said it would make the rooms look smaller, but I am SO glad I went with the darker color...I love it!

  • Hi Lauren - I re-did the floors in two of our bedrooms with Queen City Hardwood Floors.  They did a great job and I think it was 2.00 per sq. foot.  In the end I think it was 700.00.  I saved a little money by pulling up my own carpets.  I tried to pull out the toe rail thing myself but didn't have the arm power to do it.  They were nice and didn't charge me for that.

  • Sometimes the floors still look really great if they've been covered by carpet since the house was built.  A good scrubbing might be all they need.  Just wanted to throw that out there!
