Recommend a good convertible carseat, pls
I haven't registered for one or looked into one yet, because it's the one area that I was unsure of in terms of which ones had the highest safety ratings etc. So any recs?
Re: Recommend a good convertible carseat, pls
As far as safety ratings, technically is really no such thing as a safer car seat than another. As they all meet the same mininum standards.

I love my Britax Marathons. They are super easy to install and use. I have also looked into the Graco Nautilus, it's pretty comparable to the Marathon and less money.
Depending on what car you have, if you are doing extended rear facing (or are you using a convertible from the get go?) , you may want to be sure the car seat you choose fits in your car.
here is the main page for their Canadian/International board:

We have a Radian. We love that it is large enough for my big toddler but doesn't have the big plastic base that other carseats have so it is narrow enough to fit three seats across the back of a car safely if needed. It also has a steel frame rather than plastic which I personally like because it's so safe.

We also have the Britax Marathon. I love it for all of the same reasons Faith listed but I also like the smooth working 5 point harness latch and the velcro sides to hold the seat belt open for you while you get your toddler in. Beware, it is more pricey than some of the other car seats out there too(around $300)
My only complaint is that it is a huge seat. I drive a large sedan and with the Britax inside, it makes for a very tight fit for two other people. With that said though, I still love it and would recommend it unless you are driving a compact car.
Ditto Faith; they're all equally safe, what differentiates them is usability, the way they fit in different cars, fabrics, etc.
We have a Marathon *and* a Radian. The Marathon is in our car, and we got the Radian on sale while my mother was visiting and sent it back with her so we have a carseat at their place (rather than having to travel with one - these convertible seats are a pain for air travel!). I'm very happy with both, and Jakob seems equally comfortable in them.
Are you planning to get an infant seat, too? Or going straight to a convertible?
If you are planning on using an infant carrier, I would suggest perhaps waiting to get the convertible until you need it. They are always coming up with new things, so waiting would get you the most current carseat.
Otherwise, I have a First Years True Fit. I love the sit, but it is a bit of a PITA when backwards facing if you need to adjust the strap length. It has a "continuous feed" strap, so you don't really need to adjust the strap length very often, but I just had to do it because of Lauren's fall clothes being bulkier, and the adjuster is kind of wedged in by the back of the seat making it hard to get to. But I love the actual seat.
Good point. We do extended rear-facing, so J was almost 2 before he sat forward-facing. Kate is 13 months and still 2 pounds shy of the weight limit for forward-facing.
