BR- AW- My doctors appointments

My doctors office is doing something new and optional called 'Centering' It's where instead of a regular doctors visit (waiting room, somewhat short visit w/ limited time) they are doing group appointments with 9-12 couples (and no children are allowed). It's held after the clinic is closed and the midwife gives her phone to someone else so we get her without any distractions for two hours. We take our own weight and blood pressure and then she will measure our bellies. (If we ever have something we need to talk about w/ her that's private, we can come in privately or call her). I like this idea because we have lots of time to ask questions and something I've learned is that in situations like this, many people ask great questions that I've never even thought of. We're also looking forward to getting to know other couples who have LO's the same age as us. My friends are still there but I noticed we don't get invited anymore :-(

From now until March we're going to be doing a hospital/birthing center tour (the birthing center is right by the hospital and is equipped for water births even!) labor & breathing classes, breastfeeding class, infant care & cpr... all kinds of topics that I can't even remember.

I feel so lucky to be able to have this. I know you can never be completely prepared but I'm going to feel so much more so with this new kind of dr visit. I'm also lucky that the hospital/birth center is 7 minutes away from our house and that I love both midwives and the obstetrician so I'm comfortable with any of them (the OB was voted one of the best in PHX for 2009. I only saw him once four years ago but he still remembers my name and goes out of his way to say hello to us when we come in). Also, I was going through this thing where I hated my job even though I knew I should be grateful to have one. Now I really am grateful b/c of my insurance. I paid a one time co-pay of $10 and that's it for the rest of the pregnancy!!!! Even when I went to the perinatologist for my level 2 U/S and amnio, no co-pay!

Thanks for listening to me being an AW. I'm just now getting really excited about everything. My first 11 weeks I was so fearful of a m/c. Then I figured I was in the clear, I had one happy week and then from weeks 12-16 I was so messed up b/c of the ds scare that I think I stopped bonding w/the baby & nothing made me smile.

Re: BR- AW- My doctors appointments

  • That sounds really great.  I have heard of good insurance, but $10 for everything!! that sounds amazing!!

Glad things are looking up & I just noticed your ultrasound in your siggy.  How amazing is that little handprint?!?!?

  • how exciting that you are able to have the birthing experience you want to have :) i can't believe you are already almost half way there
  • That sounds really cool!

I know, isn't insurance great?!?  Mine is like that too.  I had to pay a copay when I went to the peri once, but they mailed me a check (for the full amt) because I had overpaid (so I really didn't have to pay!).

Congrats - sounds like everything is on the right track! How wonderful!!!

  • That sounds awesome!!!  I am sure you are going to learn so much..especially with the other couples asking questions you may not have thought to ask.

I only had to pay $14 to have Ashton:-)

  • That is so cool! And your insurance is amazing! Smile
  • Awww, that's really great! I'm glad things are going so well now and the centering group sounds really cool =) I'm also jealous of your co-pay b/c I already put out $250 for pg-related bloodwork so far =( sucks! Hope things continue to be smooth sailing from here on out!!

  • That sounds fantastic!  I'm so happy for you that things are going so much better now.
  • Wow Julie that sounds like an awesome set-up.  I am glad you're feeling positive again and are excited about becoming a mommy.  Boo to your friends for not inviting you...I guess it's somewhat inevitable, but it still sucks.  I don't have any friends here so it's a moot point in my situation really.  That said, I hope that now we're KU and becoming parents I might meet some new folks also and hopefully, finally make some friends here.  It's rough.  All my besties are 1500+ miles away!

And ditto on the health insurance...that was one major obstacle to us even considering having a baby.  In CA I was self-employed and self-insured with a PPO that basically covered catastrophic events.  My BFF was in the same boat and had to pay $6K for her son's birth ON TOP of the insurance premiums she was already paying!  YIKES!  Her doc took monthly payments from month 3-9.  Like you, I have great insurance...$15 copay for all of my visits and $25 for the level II ultrasound with a peri.  Can't beat that!  I do wish they covered at least part of the cost of a breast pump and offered the option to birth at the local birthing center rather than the hospital though.
