How did you find a job?

Did you get out and go to places and ask if they were hiring? Did you apply online? Use some kind of service (whether through school or other)?

As you know I had an interview 2 weeks ago for a job at a bank. I never heard from them one way or the other, so now it is back to the grind. I found that job in the newspaper, so now where do I look?

TIA

Re: How did you find a job?

  • I got the job I currently have working through a headhunter.

  • Work with recruiting firms. They will find you a job and get you interviews at a lot more places than you could do on your own.
  • I've always had luck w/ Monster, Career Builder and the like.  I also recomend headhunters.

  • I picked a few large companies in the area that I would be interested in and went directly to their website.

  • Your best bet is networking...talk to everyone you know.  Talk to your friends...talk to your friends' parents...network, network, network.  Your best way into a company is through word of mouth...hands down.

Randomly sending out resumes on websites (especially with larger companies) will send your resume directly into a black hole.

Second best...as a PP mentioned, is go directly to the companies website (as opposed to going through Monster)...also check and see if there is an HR email address as opposed to a resume submission application.

  • Thanks for the advice girls.

  • Another thing...are there any "young professionals" groups in your city?  If so, those are great meetings/socials to go to in order to meet more people and get more insight into the hiring in your city.

ITA. I work for a small investment firm and have a lot of sway over who we hire. I ALWAYS ALWAYS hire people I know. Hiring randoms is just too big of a liability for me.

I got this job through a posting at my college's career services department.  I sent in my resume and then forgot about it until my now-boss called months later. It was providencial timing because I was just about to sign another contract.

     Good luck!

  • First job out of college I went to County websites and applied for positions.

  • I actually found my last job through the newspaper classifieds.  I'm sure networking and websites work great, but they have never worked for me.  I'm surprised the classifieds did, but it was a teaching job so they just advertised everywhere and that's where I happened to find them.
  • I saw a job posting on Careerbuilder.com and the private daycare/preschool/kindergarten is about 2 minutes away from our apartment, so I just stopped in with my resume and letters of recommendation. For some reason it was an old job posting that never got taken down, but they actually had a kindergarten opening that hadn't been posted yet, so they let me apply for it. I had an interview the next week, a demo lesson the week after that, and I was hired the week after that!

So, long story short, it was on Careerbuilder.com.

  • I spent my last 6 months in college sending out my reel and resume (I'm in multimedia) and making sure all the networking I had done in school was still in place. I sent out over 150 emails, visited or interned for every major production house in the city, and stayed in touch with people. But then there was a recession and nobody could hire you.

BUT I was lucky and an alumni at a small multimedia company sent an email to his old video prof, which happened to be my current prof, and he forwarded it to me. I replied within 2 minutes of receiving it, interviewed 4 days before graduation, accepted 1 day after graduation.

summary: i was in the right place at the right time + networking + lots of prep

  • For my jobs since college:

Job 1: Went through my parents phone book and sent resumes to every company with one of my keywords in it that I could find in the phone book.  Heard nothing for 2 months, but then got a call asking if I'd be willing to relocate to the Boston area.  My school loans were about to come due and I was 22...so hell yeah!

Job 2: I think one of my supervisors from  Job 1 knew of the company and mentioned it to me.  Sent in a resume, got a call a month later.

Job 3: Monster.com.  I submitted my resume online and got a call within 24 hours.  I was a perfect fit for what they were looking for.

  • Most jobs are found through networking. I was moving and my much older half-brother knew someone that worked at a school there. They liked my resume. I had a Skype interview (I was in a different state) and didn't get the job. A couple months later they ask me to come in for a personal interview for another open teacher position and I got the job. I teach at a Spanish immersion school and really love it! It's so random how it worked out.
