do you use water/vinegar solution for cleaning?

I ventured over to the Cleaning & Organizing board and was surprised how pretty much all of them use water/vinegar solution for washing clothes, cleaning tubs to mopping floors...well, practically everything! I am aware of the cleaning use of vinegar but haven't gotten the chance to using it. Now, reading all the posts made me think I should start making it a habit of using it. Do any of you use them on a daily basis?

  • I use a 50/50 mix for wiping my kitchen counters. It cuts through the grease and sticky stuff w/o chemicals. I add it to my laundry instead of fabric softener.

But the ladies on that board have many more uses for it too. Pour over baking soda in your garbage disposal to clean and fershen it up.

I had no idea until today that I can use it as fabric softener. Do you dilute it first or no?

I just read about cleaning/deodorizing the garbage disposal using vinegar & baking soda. I think I'll try this tonight!!

  • i use it in my laundry...it's fabulous!  plus it gets that funky towel smell out.  my cat decided to leave me a present and peed on my dress...nice, anywhoo, vinegar works like a charm!

i use it to clean windows and mirrors.  haven't tried it as a cleaning solution yet but i hear it works great.  i just bought the ginormous bottle at costco...it was only like $5 (i'm sure it's much cheaper everywhere else).

Ditto to this. I use the same amount as I would fabric softner. It makes my towels nice and soft.

YES!!!  This is the only thing that works if I absent-mindedly leave a wet towel on the floor.

ooh i wanna try that too. where in the dishwasher do you put it?

our sink has a funky smell so i will try the baking soda + vinegar combo tonight! i'm excited. i actually wanna go home now and try it out lol.

  • I use it all over the place! It works well as fabric softener, as pps mentioned, and it's a great surface cleaner and window/mirror cleaner. If you get calcium buildups on your faucets or other surfaces, it's also a great cleanser for that (when I lived in Alice Springs, there were crazy calcium deposits there - the electric kettle would get coated in vinegar soooo fast, I'd have to boil vinegar in it once a week to keep it clean), and apparently can also help clean the deposits out of your hair if your water is hard.

I've read that you can use it in your shower instead of bleach or another cleanser, but I tried it and honestly, it did nothing. The gunge did come off, but I think it was more as a result of my scrubbing it hard for AGES than anything to do with the vinegar - plain water probably would have had the same result, and I ended up going back over it with a bathroom cleaner.

I fill a downy ball with it and toss in the wash.

It doesn't. Sad I tried it for over a month (spraying it on every day after my shower) and it only minorly improved the amount of soap scum that attached. But then, I might just have hardy soap scum lol. Stick out tongue

our dishwasher has a little place for the rinse agent so i just put in there. if your dw doesn't have a place, you could always just throw a cupful on the bottom...prob have the same effect.

Lisa - I think you have to sprinkle baking soda first, then vinegar and let it sit before scrubbing.

I tried this too (it works so well in my kitchen!) but nada. Maybe it's the soap we use or something? It was really stuck on there...which sounds gross I know lol.

I found something that works! Barkeepers friend. I loathe my glass shower doors. This stuff gets through the soapa nd hard water. Great for polishing stainless steel sinks too.

  • Lisa, maybe just try bleach on your shower? I haven't put it to the test on my shower but Josh uses it to remove mould from the bathroom ceiling (we have poor ventilation in our bathroom).

This piece from Today Tonight (not sure if that's just a Melbourne show) has some ideas:

    http://au.todaytonight.yahoo.com/article/6032506/consumer/cutting-cost-cleaning

Might not be as 'friendly' as vinegar as far as on your skin or whathaveyou but it still works out cheaper than the commercial brands.

  • I mix vinegar & warm water and clean my dogs ears with it. One of my little guys has (I should say had) a lot of problems with his left ear. I researched it online and this actually happens to a lot of dogs. People said they tried so many meds from the vet and spent big $ and nothing helped except this. I thought it wouldn't work and would hurt my dog since his ear was peeling on the inside but he loved it! I think it soothed him. It went away within days and has never come back!
  • another use for vinegar (jaysgirl's post reminded me). i had jabbed my toe on something and the toenail started to get kinda thick like fungus...soaked my foot in vinegar for about a week and voila...gone!  i pph vinegar! :::as i'm pouring some on my salad:::

I need to get some Barkeepers friend.  Where do you find it?  My husband's shower doors are nasty.  I tried vinegar... I even tried spraying paper towels with vinegar and sticking them like wallpaper all over his glass doors to let it soak (I read to do that).  Nothing gets them crystal clear.  I think he just has weird oil that steams onto it and can't be removed... maybe he sweats varnish or that 3M photo adhesive.  I don't know.  My solution was to not shower in there.  You know it's bad if I moved into a kid's bathroom to avoid it.  We use the Dow scrubbing bubbles and tried the daily shower spray...doors still murky.  At least it's disinfected cloudiness.

We've used vinegar and water to clean the kitchen, coolers, plants, drains most often.  The vinegar that you use as a rinse in your hair is apple cider vinegar.  There are all different formulas online ... from a spoonful to 1/2 cup (shrugs).  I tried 1/4 cup ACV in a big party cup of water after shampoo/conditioner.  Let it sit. Rinse.  My head still smelled like vinegar.  It looked nice, but who wants to smell like an Easter egg?  I guess if your H is out of town and you have a day/night free, you could try it.

  • In 2008 we decided to go as green as possible, including cleaning products so now we mainly use vinegar and baking soda for a lot of our cleaning.  I did buy some eco-friendly cleaners, but at the end of the day, I actually like making my own.  It's cheaper, for sure.
  • a restaurant/bar i use to work at had us use it to clean the tables and bar counters
  • Over the weekend I bought some to use :)  I'm also going to buy Charlies Soap for laundry and stuff that vinegar won't touch like the shower.  I'm so glad to be consolidating our cleaning arsenal and being more "green"
