Where do you walk/hike with your dog?

DH and I like to walk the new pup everyday. We have our neighborhood and Beech Acres Park up the street, but we are looking for more options. We went to a place that is almost at the end of Salem right before Kellog, but it's pretty small. There is another place on Kellog (California nature preserve or something like that), but I was more than a little irritated when we pulled in today and there was a no dogs sign!

We live in Anderson and don't want to drive more than 5-10 minutes to walk the dog every evening. I guess the place we are looking for could be a weekend place to walk and a little farther away. We are looking for something like a path in the woods type of thing, not really a paved concrete path).

TIA!

Re: Where do you walk/hike with your dog?

  • Most of the Hamilton County Park District parks allow dogs.  I know they're allowed on the paved trails but I can't remember if theyr'e allowed on the hiking trails.  It might be a trail-to-trail thing.  You could also go to a dog park but you won't get much exercise, just the dog.

  • You could check out Woodland Mound, I know they have a couple hiking type of trails, I'm not sure if they allow pets or not, but it would be worth a shot!

  • Redbird Hollow.  It runs from Terrace Park through Indian Hill.  It's actually part of a horse trail (which used to be where the railroad was) that runs through the woods.  Lots of people walk dogs and don't mind if your dog, if dependable, is off leash.  There are also smaller trails that branch off of it.  Running parallel is a creek that you can splash around in and at one point it pools up to make a nice little swimming hole.  First place my oldest fur-kid ever swam:)
  • BTW< I love the pic of your dog.  Is he/she a white GS?
  • What about the walking / bike trail in Anderson that runs from the Anderson Civic center and down by the hospital and across Clough pike and up in to the woods? I have never walked the trail, but I see people with dogs every time I drive down 5 mile.

Also, I have taken my dog to Julifs park before, its not really a hike, but it's a walking trail.

Thanks! She is a white german shepard mix! She has all the features (the ears, the tail, etc.) and I haven't seen another dog that really looks like her.  We don't know what she is mixed with but we think she is a mix and not a full breed because she has 1 coat instead of the usual 2 that pure breed german shepards.

  • Does she have a more wirey coat than typical?  Our GS looks diff than most GS's and she only has one coat.  It's a little more thick or wirey...def not fluffy.  It's just a difference in the german lines vs the american lines.  Americans have bred ther GS's to be bigger and higher at the shoulders, whereas germans are typically smaller all around.
