Your fave crock pot recipes...

I was reading a few post down and there was talk about a crock pot post. I was waiting for someone else to start it but I can't wait anymore. I'm the worst cook ever but even I can't screw up crock pot recipes. So, what are your faves? (and now I have an excuse to not go to the store until tomorrow Stick out tongue)

Re: Your fave crock pot recipes...

  • We made this recipe, and it really really really rocked.  It's a beef stew.  So yummy.  It could have used another root vegetable - like potatoes or maybe .... dang, what's that white root vegetable called?

But I've never had such tasty cooked carrots in my life, and I hate cooked carrots.

The reviewers say you can use cheaper stew meat, the kind they sell already cubed up.  We used the kind they said to use, but it was pricey.

  • Oh my, I LOVE LOVE the crock pot.  It's makes cooking so easy and delicious, and you can use even the most basic and cheap ingredients and come out with a killer homemade meal.

I hope people share recipes b/c I would love some new ones!

Just a few of my faves, mostly of the meat and potato variety... (I am not a strict recipe follower, btw.. usually lots of guesstimating going on!)

Pot roast -- pot roast, onions, mushrooms, cream of mushroom soup and Lipton onion soup mix.  Mix together, add a bit of water, milk and pepper, and done!  You can also use beef stew meat or other smaller cuts if you don't have a whole roast.

Corned beef brisket -- corned beef brisket, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and onions.  I usually cook the carrots, potatoes and onions with the meat for most of the day, but then remove them and replace them with the cabbage a few hours before we're ready to eat.

Whole chicken -- remove the skin and innards from the chicken (season with olive oil, lemon, paprika, pepper, etc.), set atop a bed of potatoes and onions, then pour in a couple cups of vegetable or chicken broth.  When you get home, thicken up the juices with flour and you've got a killer gravy to top it all with!

Goulash -- love this over egg noodles.  I generally follow this recipe: http://tinyurl.com/cmlxlu

Regular old spaghetti and chili cook very well in the crock pot, too.  Much better than the rush-job I'd usually do on the stove-top.

  • I loooooooove chili done in the crockpot! So tasty! In addition to regular chili, I've also done this white chili recipe a few times - it's a bit high fat, but tastes yum!

  • I use mine for chili, too - it makes the house smell so good in the Fall!  I also do whole chickens, in a method similar to Lola's.  The chicken just falls off the bone, and the leftovers are great for sandwiches and other recipes.

I also cook a lot of pork in it (I don't eat beef v. often):

Fake "Kalua" pork: Pierce a large pork roast all over with a carving fork.  Rub in 1-1/2 Tbsp Hawaiian sea salt, and 1 Tbsp Liquid Smoke.  Cook on low 4 hours, turn, and cook another 4 hours (time depends on size of roast).  Shreds easily when done.

Apple Butter pork: Place a pork tenderloin, 1-1/2c. apple juice, 1/2c. apple butter, 1/4c. light brown sugar, and 1/4 Tbsp. each of cinnamon and cloves in the slow cooker.  Leave on low for 5-7 hours.

Maple-Mustard Pork: Place a 2lb pork loin roast, 1c. real maple syrup (not pancake syrup), 4 Tbsp. dijon mustard, and 1-1/2 Tbsp. each of cider vinegar and soy sauce in the slow cooker.  Cook on low 5-7 hours.

  • We like to do turkey chili and chicken tortilla soup in the crock pot.

Here's a recent favorite I found, I love this chicken!
