We are going to register on Saturday. Other then the big items like a swing, bouncer, etc. what are some of your must haves? Anything that you think isnt worth it? Thank you for your advice ladies!
Re: Ladies with kids/babies
waterproof matress pad
multiple changing pad covers
at least one more boppy cover
a boppy
bottle warmer
breast pump (if you are breastfeeding and i know that it's a big ticket item)
cheap onesies (yes the decoratives ones are cute but once they start getting stained from poop and spit up, the cheap ones you don't care about are the ones you use more and more.
thermometer
Everything Mel said, except I would say see if your hospital rents breast pumps, ours did for $35 a week it worked out for us b/c I ended up failing my child and couldn't nurse or pump. If you find it's working for you then I'd buy one.
We got a small travel system, the seat was a regular seat but the stroller is smaller than most travel systems, most of them are so bulky and heavy you end up ditching the stroller pretty quick. Or get the seat and a snap and go, then move on to a nicer umbrella stroller, they make store shopping much easier.
I didn't really use our Boppy much but again I failed at the whole nursing thing. A wipe warmer was nice when she was little, cold wipes always seemed to shock her and I still use it but it's not plugged in.
Cate loved her excersaucer, pick one that has lot's to do at different stages, she used her from the time she was 3 months old till she was 10 months. A Bumbo seat is great. If I had the high chair to do all over again I would skip the big high chair and just get one that goes on a kitchen chair, I HATE OURS and I can't wait to sell it in a garage sale. If I think of more I'll email you.
Thanks ladies, im jotting all of this down. Yeah if anyone forgets anything you can email me. Im going out for a bit now but ill be back later.
I plan on trying to BF so we will see what happens with that, i know sometimes it doesnt necessarily work out. Thanks caroline for the rental suggestion, ill ask nick since he works at the hospital i will be delivering at he can find out pretty quickly.
Definitely the Boppy! Even if you don't breastfeed you can use it to prop them up on their backs or on their tummys.
A jumperoo (we have the Fisher Price Precious Planets one and Declan just LOVES it!)
Bumbo seat
Like Mel said cheap onsies (keep in mind Gerber brand runs small)
If you get a breast pump I recommend you get the Lansinoh double electric pump (it's half the price of the popular Medela brand but works great!)
You might want to see about borrowing or buying a cheap bouncer seat and swing. Declan never uses his bouncer (luckily we borrowed it) but he does love his swing. If you do get a swing get a travel one because they don't take up as much room.
Things we didn't use: wipe warmer (my dad told me their dry out the wipes and can cause a fire if left on too long); bottle warmer (Declan takes his bottles right from the fridge); microwave sterilizer (I just boiled most bottle parts at the beginning and now run them through the dishwasher every night)
**A tip for boys when you're changing their diapers...be sure to point their penis down. Luckily I knew that from when my brother was little.
Highchair that goes on a regualr seat-I think the Fisher Price one reclines a bit-then you only need one for home or if you go to a friends house etc
boppy for sure
swing and bouncer-the girls loved both of these
pack and play
baby gates
monitor-we have the Sony 9mh and also the summer video (not the handheld one). Once the baby starts to sleep for longer stretches it was invaluable to us to be able to see if they really needed us to go in or if they were just making noise. The sound is not great on the video one so we keep the sound off. We use the Sony one for sound since it had a great range for if we were working in the backyard etc. It also has a bunch of different channels in case you are picking up sounds from other people's monitors
sleep sacks-we still use the big ones. After swaddling it was a good transition and you don't have to worry about blankets getting stuck around them
Dipaer Champ-you can use regular trash bags not have to pay for the bags like the Genie, and it keeps the smell in well (trust me on this there is a lot -of poop in this house)
Spit cloths-get the gerber prefold diaper ones work great and you will definately use them
I can't think of what it is called but it goes in your infant car seat and is like a fleece bag, It kept them toasty warm in Maine and if you are out shopping somewhere you can just unzip the bag and not have to deal with a coat or .snowsuit which is not super safe (so I have read) in car seats in general. We would put them in pants and a sweater and hat and with the fleece bag thing they were super warm.
I am sure I will think of more!
Ditto on what Towny said above. We have the Summer Infant handheld video monitor and LOVE IT! I'm able to watch Declan when he's fussing and half the time he's still asleep.
The fleece bag she's talking about is the JJ Cole Bundle-me. We just put Declan's on his seat this week and it does keep them nice and warm!
The boppy and an extra cover
bottle warmer
swing (my girls love the FP My Little Lamb Cradle N Swing - it goes from side to side or front to back)
bouncy seat
when they are newborns mine wore the t-shirt onesies until their belly buttons fell off.
like Mel said, lots of extra plain white onesies
we have the same highchairs as mrs. towny although we haven't used them yet
extra mattress pads, sheet savers, sheets, and changing pad covers
my girls love the fisher price aquariums in their cribs
every night they go in the Snug & Tug swaddles. They are wonderful. And have a size that is from 14-22 lbs.
we use two monitors: the angelcare monitor which has a sensor pad that goes underneath the crib and monitors breathing and room temp and the summer video monitor. We love both!
We didn't use a wipes warmer. Thought about it but then what happens when you are out and need to change him? He wont be used to the cold wipes and will probably freak out.
Don't buy too many bottles. I recommend getting a couple of a few different brands until you know which ones will work best with him (unless you plan on bf).
I forgot some things:
I have a baby sling. This is great, especially for around the house when I need to do things and the baby's are cranky. They love being in there and next to my body.
I do use the microwave sterilizer. But I know I am in the minority of people that sterilizes their bottles after each use. Since I have two and can't keep track of who uses which nipples, I feel better sterilizing.
Get plenty of burp cloths.
The Gerber Nuk pacifiers seem to work the best for my girls. They just stopped using the soothie ones from the hospital. I wouldn't go crazy buying a bunch of binks. It's like the bottles, they will take to a particular one.
