Re: big island recs?

  • Jenn! I've been meaning to email you. I will send you an email now :-).

  • hi hi hi Jenn! how are you?? where were you going to go if you did get your passport?  is this an anniversary trip?  anyway, BI is great.  you guys will have a great time.  I haven't been there in several years so I don't have any good recs but it is one of my favorite islands.  If you get a chance, drive up to the observatory on Mauna Kea.  It is super cool (literally--bring sweaters)!

  • there was a thai restaurant we went to that was really good - I don't remember the name but I know it was near the kohala coast or just north of it - it was listed in the Big Island Revealed guidebook which you need to get anyway :)

also, here is my review from way back in the day!

make sure you give yourself a whole day to see the volcano... early to do hikes/walks and then around sunset time (bring jackets and flashlights) so you can hike out as far as they will let you so you can see the lava flowing into the ocean (if there is active lava flow) - it's so cool!

  • Nori's Saimin and Snacks in Hilo is sooooo ono! drool...

  • Hi hi hi!  :)

We did a "Feel the Heat" helicopter tour over the volcano that was amazing!  The company was Paradise Helicopters and the helicopter doesn't have any doors, so you really do feel the heat coming off the lava.  We also stayed two nights in Volcano at the Volcano Village Lodge (where redshoegirl stayed on her honeymoon); so glad we had that time over there.

We did a fancy dinner at CanoeHouse at Mauna Lani resort that was pricey, but delish and totally worth it.  This photo was taken there:

  • Oh!  And do either of you play golf?  If so, the Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea resort courses are absolutely dreamy (but usually quite windy!  My windy golf game stinks, but I had a great time anyway).
