Thoughts on Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize?

A lot of the boards are discussing this today.  Mostly with "WTF?" comments.  But here's something a Nestie on my other local board posted that I thought was enlightening:

Here's an interesting article re: "Common misconceptions about the nobel peace prize."

The part that would pertain here is the last one:

"Myth: The prize is awarded to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy only after they have proven successful. More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments."

Re: Thoughts on Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize?

  • I don't like discussing this kind of thing on the nest, but I will say this: (and I am paraphrasing from something someone said on BOTB, which I think is a really good point)

There is a lot of shiit being said about Obama, but let's not forget that he had nothing to do with the selection process. It's the committee who chooses these things that should be getting the attention, whether it be negative or positive.

  • I think it's a bit premature. But the competition was not exactly tight this year.
  • I initially thought it was premature too, and I still kind of think it should have been awarded to someone else but understanding the intent of the prize gives me more perspective.

I do think it will make the haters hate him even more, which is too bad since it's not something he had control over.  Sounds like the administration itself was pretty surprised.

  • I just saw his acceptance speech, and I think it was classy. It makes up for what I may have initially thought of the situation.

  • I was initially shocked but I'm really hoping it means positive things to come.
  • I thought it was a little preemptive at first as well, and am still a bit unsure as to what I think.  Rock you make a good point about encouragement for efforts, West German Chancellor Willy Brandt was awarded the Nobel before communist countries were reconciled in eastern Europe.  But President Carter didn't receive it until 20 years after his presidency and it was for a long commitment to peacemaking.

Brandt and Carter are mentioned in this article:

  • i'm not getting far into this but i will say i think it's not right that he was only in office 11 days before nominations were due.

There are people out there, even risking their lives for things they believe in, that i feel deserve it more.

  • I will admit I am all for Obama, but I think that it was premature.
