Heading to BC: Any suggestions?

Hubby and I are thinking about heading up north for a weekend away. We've been to Victoria and Vancouver. I love Vancouver but a part of me wants to stay somewhere that's near a city but not directly in the city.

I was thinking either Whistler? (Maybe too much for a two-nighter?) Or the San Juan Islands (don't even know where to start)?

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Places to stay? Dine?

TIA =)

Re: Heading to BC: Any suggestions?

  • I loved Whistler but I have no idea what there is to do there at this time of year since you probably can't ski/snowboard yet.  And it's a pretty long drive from Vancouver so, yeah, maybe too far for two nights?  Sorry, I'm not much help!  Haha.

  • I would defintely suggest Whistler, which is about a 2hr drive from Vancouver. It is truly a beautiful spot. There is lots do, including the Peak to Peak run from Whistler to Blackcomb (Amy4773 did it when she was here), but only if your not afraid of heights, but the view is spectacular. You could also check out the Olympic venues there too.

The Gulf Islands are beautiful and have some very quaint B &B's as well as Bowen Island or the Sunshine Coast. Mind you DH & I have done alot of camping in both areas. It is sooo just so peaceful. Lots of hiking, kayaking, mountain biking or even nice relaxing spa to end the day.

Hope these will you help to jump start some ideas. If you have any questions, let me know.

  • Sounds like fun! Smile

So this would be a weekend getaway right?

Whistler would be awesome... they do have snow already! Big Smile  The rates will be going up really drastically though... but check them out anyway, they still might be on the low side.  My girlfriend and I went and stayed at The Hilton, it was $139/night and the room was really nice.  The high season rates will be anywhere from $250-500/night Surprise, maybe less depending on location.  Also, The Fairmont has advertised some really great rates right now for downtown... I'm a member of the President's Club (which is free to sign up) and just received the email full of special rates the other day.  But back to Whistler, I think it would be a great getaway this time of year, MH and I went years ago when we first met in November and had a great time, sat by the fire, went to a great crepe restaurant for breakfast and then it snowed... it was the best weekend.  Other than that, maybe staying downtown might work out? Do you like hockey? Maybe catch a Canucks game while you're here?  Kriss will chime in with some ideas too I'm sure Smile

  • I would totally stay in Whistler for 2 nights!  I loved it there - one day was not nearly enough, a weekend would have been heavenly.  The gondola ride up Whistler Mountain was spectacular, and the peak-to-peak from Whistler Mountain to Blackcomb Mountain was amazing.  I could have done without the open chair lift to the very, very tip of Whistler Mountain (VERY scary), but the view was breathtaking.

If we'd had more time we definitely would have gone and spent a day in Victoria.

We could always do a nestie gtg if you decide to stay in Van Big Smile. Have you done any of the touristy things here in the city?

  • I love Whistler!  There are so many things to do at any time of year.

I don't have any advice on the islands - sorry!

Just because it's supposed to snow tomorrow doesn't mean we don't want visitors in Northern BC too Wink

  • Whistler!  As already mentioned, there are many things to do.  It's hard when it is ski season, b/c you have to make a decision between skiing and all of those other things.  I would stay in Whistler Village with a place that has a nice outdoor hot tub. Everything is walking distance - restaurants, bars and shops.

  • Whistler is awesome!  I took DH there for his b-day last year which was around this time of year.  Rates were still low but as Tara said, they will sky rocket.  If the weather's nice, there are trails and lakes and lots of pretty stuff to see.

We went to the Bearfoot Bistro for dinner (Chef's course and wine pairings) and it was just amazing.  Araxi is where the new winner of Hell's Kitchen will be head chef.

The Islands are nice, too.  I was at Metchosin on Vancouver Island and stayed at a beautiful B&B.  It was right on the beach (too cold now but still pretty!).  We also stayed in Sidney, again, by the sea.  This was for my sister's wedding so we didn't have any time to wander but we'd like to in the future.  These 2 places are pretty close to Victoria as well.

I hope you will stop by Vancouver for a GTG  Smile
