What do you usually have for Thanksgiving?

We're hosting our very first "big holiday" at our house this year.  Thanksgiving.

I'm trying to decide what all will be on the menu.  There will be 17 of us in attendance (DH's family plus mine).  So far we'll be having turkey, ham...and I'm trying to decide on side dishes.  I'd like something different from the norm (mac and cheese, gb casserole, etc) but don't want to screw up Thanksgiving!  What do you have usually?

Re: What do you usually have for Thanksgiving?

  • I have never had mac and cheese or GB casserole for Thanksgiving

Last year for turkey day we had 17 people over for dinner, yup in our apt! John salted the turkey which was off the hook AMAZING!!!! Then we did a cauliflower pure', home made cranberry sauce, sweet potato gratin, roasted root vegetables with a maple syrup glaze, parker house rolls, andouille stuffing and several pies.

We started several days before and then just really cooked everything at once. It was great and I have pictures!

  • mmmm that sounds amazing

I'd love to get your recipe for homemade cranberry sauce, if you want to share it!  I also want to make some rolls, one of my parents' friends makes the best so I want his recipe.

I'm sure my dad will want to make his stuffing he always makes.  I thought of maybe an eggplant casserole?  It always seems like we have 80 million casseroles, and really you only need a few good things!

which root vegetables did you use?  I've been wanting to do something with parsnips.  I also want a good brussels sprouts recipe, that would maybe be a good side dish.

  • Here's what we have:

    Turkey
    Turkey gravy and rice
    sweet potatoes
    potato salad
    corn
    peas
    eggplant casserole
    rolls
mac & cheese (dude, it's not thanksgiving w/o this)

I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of right now.

  • Cranberry recipe is easy!
1 cup of orange juice, pour over 1 bag of cranberries and bring to a boil, you can add 1/2 cup sugar, I don't. Turn down and simmer for apx 20 minutes until all the cranberries have popped. Add 2 TBLS grand marnier and stir, let it cool and solidfy, we serve ours rooms temperature.

The root veg dish is equally as easy, parsnips, brussel sprouts, broccoli, carrots, onion, toss with a little olive oil, salt, pepper and rosemary. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes YUMMO!

And I have never had a family holiday without it.  I would cry.

We also usually have a green salad of some kind.  And my gram used to make squash casserole.  And we usually have stuff to snack on before dinner.  And of course dessert.

Lord, no wonder we are all overweight.

For purely selfish reasons, I have totally given very serious thought to taking family vacations during major holidays.

    I applaud you.

    So jealous!

If you have time you should take a trip to Plymouth (home of the Pilgrims and all that), it's a great place to be at Thanksgiving. PM me if you want some ideas of where to go.

I have no idea what we are having for Thanksgiving. Nothing I eat that's for sure :) Thanksgiving has to be my least favorite holiday. Oh we will have MH's mawmaws chicken and dumplings which I love!

  • We typically do 3 Thanksgivings (I know - this is nuts but such is the divorced family life!) so I'll just give the best dishes from each. Ray's dad always makes fried turkey which is fantastical, there is always mashed taters & gravy, oyster and cornbread dressing , shrimp & mirliton casserole, my home made sweet potato pie, pecan pie, spinich and artichoke casserole.

     And now I'm starving!

Well we are flying up on Thanksgiving Day. We had planned on going to Plymouth but we canceled our rental car but that may change.
