Restaurants recs in the area

Looking to try a new restaurant for DH's birthday this weekend.  We are in York but will travel to Harrisburg, Lancaster, Mechanicsburg, etc.  Preferably a non-chain restaurant.   Something pretty casual but with really good food (per DH's request with the casual clothing)!   How is Cafe Magnolia??  We've never been there but haven't wanted to try it.  Also what about the Hershey Pantry?  Is it casual but good food?  Thanks for any input!

Re: Restaurants recs in the area

  • Bricco downtown is delish! Cafe Fresco in Hbg is also really good. Cafe Magnolia is good for lunch but I've never had dinner there.
  • The Altland House is nice for dinner.  It has a quiet atmosphere usually and the food is good.

  • We like the Firehouse in Harrisburg. Dukes on the river is more of a casual thing but the crab pretzel thing is amazing!! LOVE the Hershey Pantry but tis more of a breakfast place IMO. We've only eaten dinner there once and it was good but nothing spectacular. How much are you looking to spend? Gibraltar in Lancaster is good for special occasions but $.

  • Have you heard of Loxley's? It is in the hotel that is near the Dutch Apple. It just opened recently and I have heard nothing but good about it! The inside is designed to look like the inside of a tree (from what I hear). The prices aren't bad but I hear the food is good. DH and I really want to try it out.

  • AH....just checking on Loxley's that pp mentioned since I never heard of it.

It's right next door to the Dutch Apple in the heritage Hotel, formally Park Plaza.

Depending on the style of food there is El Serrano that is actually 3  different style restaurants. The main floor is Peruvian/Mexican, Culturas on the top floor is tapas and another section is Clementinas which is Prix Fixe.

Dh and I really Like Iron Hill but I think that is a chain.

Check out various places in Lancaster city as well. There a several new restaurants that opened fairly recently.

  • Loxley's is AMAZING! such a cool atmosphere and the food was excelent.  Very casual but a huge menu and they have everything!! Iron Hill is also great, it's a chain of about 5-6 restaurants but they make their own beers, the nachos are to die for and again a huge menu and casual!! both right over the bridge from York!!

let us know where you decide!

  • We live in York and we will travel to Lancaster a lot for some of the good restaurants. DH works in Wrightsville and a lot of his co-workers are from over that way, so they always recommend good places.

We really like Mosby's Pub which is in Mt Joy...one of our favorites, havent been there in a little while, but its always good. Call ahead, they take reservations and they have a website if you Google them.  We also like Country Table Family Restaurant in Mt Joy area as well... thats also a great place, and very reasonable.  Another good place we've gone to but havent been to in a while is Cats Meow in Manheim. Such a cool restaurant.  We also liked Doc Holidays at Franklin & Marshall, but I heard that loc closed and there is only the New Cumberland loc now.  Another good place is TJ Rockwells in Elizabethtown.. always has been good.

I like hearing about all these recommendations too.. something new to try. I'll have to check out Loxley's as well.. we used to go to that hotel before it was Heritage Hotel, and eat at the restaurant inside the hotel - Sherwood Knoll. We loved it there, and there were 2 waiters the family got to know.. DH used to take me there for Homecoming dances for dinner, and we'd go with his family frequently, we were said when Heritage Hills took it over and the restaurant left.. dont know if any of the employees went to this new location or not, but didnt realize they built this there now. We'll have to check it out!

  • We live in York too and we really like Al Dente (yummy pasta!) near Mt Rose Ave...we also like (for a more finer dinning experience) the Roosevelt Tavern in the city. I, too have heard good things about Loxley's Rest...in fact we're having my step-mom's 50th b-day there (reserving a room). The Firehouse in Hburg is really good too as another person mentioned. GL and let us know where you end up =)

  • We live in York, and I've heard great things about the John Wright Mill/Restaurant in Wrightsville....they only serve dinner Thurs-Sat, though, I think.

We also really enjoy going to the Conewago Inn, off of George Street Extension near Manchester. HUGE portions of delicious food (including seafood). I often get 3 meals out of one entree!

  • As far as Hburg, ditto PPs on Firehouse and Cafe Fresco- both amazing! Also in Hburg, I LOVE Carley's, just of 2nd st on Locust.  Great Italian/Bistro style- really good pasta, gnocchi, risotto, and gourmet pizzas.

I have never been to Hershey Pantry, so I can't speak to the restaurant itself, but I went to a rehearsal dinner catered by them and the food was great!

  • Roosevelt Tavern in York City

Eagle's Nest off Mt. Rose Avenue (near Heritage Hills)

    Symposium off Centerville Road exit

  • Wow, thanks for all the suggestions!  Lots to think about.  We have been to Firehouse, El Serrano, Symposium, Iron Hill Brewery, and a few of the others mentioned.  They were really good!  I'll let you know where we go!  Thanks again!
