December weekend trips?

I'm looking to go away for  -2 nights the first weekend in December.  It is both of our birthdays! The first few years we were dating, we went up to Jackson NH to a cute little inn.  Unfortunately, the rates ahve about tripled, and I think it's out of the picture!

What would be a good weekend trip that is driveable from central MA - for $150 or under a night that time of year? I would like scenery, and a little shopping.  We are not skiers, and have already done NYC.

  • Are there no other inns or B&Bs in the Jackson area that would fit your budget?

North Conway, NH might work for you.  There's some outlet shopping there, you can drive up Mt. Washington, etc.  I've only been there in warm weather so I'm not sure what winter activities they have there but I'm sure there are some.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

Have you ever been there, MB? Seriously...H and I stayed there once. It was gross.  H always had a tendency to say "It doesn't matter" when asked smoking or non-smoking...so, we get a smoking room. The white canopy is yellow from smoke stain and we couldn't even breathe in the room. We went to CVS and stocked up on air freshners and candles.

Two good outcomes: H learned how to say "Non smoking, please." when requesting a room AND their breakfast buffet was really amazing.
