family dr vs. pediatrician?
Apparently my family doctor doesn't look after children until they are 5 or 6 (they cry too much before then)
She says I need to find a pediatrician. She gave a name of someone she recommends, but they aren't located very close to my house.
I'd prefer to have us all to go the same place, so I'm considering trying to find a new family doctor. I know that they are quite hard to come by though (especially if you already have one), so I may need to get a pedi anyway.
I was curious what you ladies do for your kids - do your family dr's see them? Or did you have to find a pedi too. I saw a family dr the whole time I was growing up and assumed this was the norm. I thought that pedi's were for more serious illnesses, etc.

Interesting. I should have mentioned I'm in Ontario. I assumed it was like that here too (family dr for regular care, pedi's for more serious issues) until my family dr told me she doesn't do babies!
I'll be interested to see what the other ladies say!
Our family dr does see babies/kids but we still take both LO's to a Pediatrician. I find that they have a lot more experience, so problems get resolved quickly. When DS caught a superbug back in 2007 and ended up in the childrens hospital, even the emergency Dr's weren't sure what was going on with him and why he was so sick. When our Pediatrician finally saw him, he knew immediately what it was even though it took the Drs at the hospital about 1 week to figure it out.
In Edmonton, we are able to chose any pediatrician that we would like for our kids(as long as they rae taking new patients). Usually the pediatrician that sees your baby at the hospital when it is born is the Dr that will take your baby on as a new patient.

They won't let us see a pediatrician unless referred by the family doc. DD was referred to a pedi in the hospital because she was born with a bent foot.
We have seen her 2 times since, both referred by the family doctor. Once when she had Rotavirus and once when we thought she was having digestive complications from Rotavirus.
I was fairly certain this is the way it is in Ontario as well. I know my niece sees a pediatrician, but can only go for that one issue. She needs a new referral for anything else, as they are deemed specialists.
Did you check the Dr out on CPSO - maybe they're really a family dr that just sees kids. When I was searching for an OB I found a lot of GPs who only did maternal care.
My understanding was that anybody can go to a pediatrician in Ontario ? if you can find one accepting new patients. My OB gave me a list of pediatricians to call but said if my baby was healthy my family doctor would be fine. So I decided to go with my family doctor.
We were referred to a pedi once, for an umbilical granuloma, and I liked him and the way he was with the baby so much better. I really wish I could see him all the time.
I would highly recommend seeing a pediatrician. My OB and all the staff at Mt. Sinai recommended it, even though DS was healthy. My OB gave me a list of peds near me, and I called them up and asked who was accepting new patients. A lot of times you can take your child to the pediatrician on call at the hospital.
It's not the case that you only take your child to a ped on a referral in Ontario, but some people have complained that it is difficult to find one. Maybe it depends on how rural your neighbourhood is.
My own experience is that my pediatrician is much quicker to book appointments, much more patient with my wailing baby. Also, some pediatricians won't accept patients unless they are newborns so it's better to get in with one right away.
In my opinion the pros outweigh the cons, but it's a person by person decision!
