POLL: How long do you hold out before turning on the heat?
I have a good friend from my teaching days who refused to run the heater before mid-November, regardless of the temperature. My Mom does something similar. I, on the other hand, can't hold out that long.

Re: POLL: How long do you hold out before turning on the heat?
I usually try to suck it up as long as possible. The sweats and blankets come out first and then once the house temperature dips to about 64 degrees and the crazy Cincy weather doesn't seem to be warming up during the day anymore I'll turn on the heat.
I should add that I think that anything below 70 is cold, though!

we turned it on today. i've been cold for a few days, but Tim finally was freezing today. I told Tim that if we have to wear sweatshirts, sweatpants, and blankets to be remotely warm, then it's too cold in our house!
But our historic townhouse in Mariemont has original windows, so we are probalby going to have to put plastic up over the windows!
I'm cold today (wearing 2 sweaters), but I haven't turned on the heat yet. I just can't get passed the fact that I was wearing shorts less than 2 weeks ago.
ETA: I think I'm going to bust out our glorious heated mattress pad. I turn it on half an hour before bedtime, climb in, then turn it off. It's amazing compared to the shock of cold sheets!
I just turned ours on a few minutes ago. I had it on here and there last week when it was cold too. Right now I have it programmed pretty low, like 65 when we're awake, 62 when we're sleeping. I don't know how people can wait until November. Our furnace broke last year and it took almost a month to get a new one. It was early to mid november when it came and we were tired of living in heavy clothes and running space heaters.
BTW-I lived in Atlanta for about a year. I had a wall mounted heater in the living room, that's it (well, it was a tiny one bedroom!) and I didn't turn the heat on until after Christmas. I went walking in the park and wore shorts right after Thanksgiving! I miss the weather!
If we didn't have B, we'd hold out longer. But his room is the coldest in the house, and he hates socks on his feet at night, let alone PJ's with feet. So for his sake we've turned it on for night time use.
Regardless though, we turn it on when we're cold. My comfort is more important than saving a few bucks. My father, on the other hand, who lives in NE Ohio, refuses to turn it on until Thanksgiving. Then, he'll only turn it to 62. His heat is off by the 15th of March each year too. My sister, who lives with him, uses a space heater and lives in 4+ layers all winter.
