Favorite NYC activities

I've been browsing the Travel board and getting ideas from friends and fam, but wanted to see what your favorite NYC activities were... we'll be there at the end of Dec.

On my 'wish list' so far:
-Rockefeller Center
-maybe a Broadway show
-dessert/coffee at Serendipity
-FAO Schwarz
-Tavern on the Green for lunch

Re: Favorite NYC activities

  • Go to the big Toys R Us instead of FAO Schwarz.  It way better and there is a ferris wheel on the inside.  Right next to that is the M&M store.  Don't forget to go see Times Square.  Also it's always fun to to into Saks Fifth Ave and look around at all the 600 dollar socks.  St. Pat's cathedral will be decorated for Christmas and have their nativity up then.  That's really close to saks.

Get the worlds greatest rice pudding from From Rice to Riches.  Super Mac is this little tiny cuby hole place that makes AMAZING gourmet mac and cheese.

I also like walking by the Cartier window.  Canal street is where you can get all the designer purses that "fell" off the truck.

Rockefellar Center will be showing their Christmas spectacular show when you are there.

  • Tavern on the Green is so so good:-)  My DH and I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this past Christmas and it was really cool!  They had all kinds of clothing and items from Bruce springsteen, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, etc.  I def want to go back.

  • Crumbs Bakery or Magnolia Bakery for cupcakes. Yum. I just like to walk around and shop. Central Park is always nice to walk around. I love the Village and SoHo, and of course walking down 5th Ave to see all the stores I cant afford.
  • *Ellen's Stardust Diner on Broadway--the waiters and waitresses sing in between serving

*Ice skating at Rockefellar Center at night

*Donut Plant in the lower east side--best donuts!

*Central Park--so pretty and romantic--fun to explore year round

*Bryant Park--outdoor vendors and ice skating set up for the winter

    Have a great time!

i second the village and soho. these are 2 of my fav parts of the city.  if you have never been, then yes times square area is a must but it is so touristy and overated in my opinion!

it is also a good time of year to take a carriage ride through central park.  this is my absolute favorite place to get away from the chaos of the city!  harper and i love the cp zoo too!

  • Thanks for the recs, ladies. I will have to talk to my H and see what we can fit in. Our hotel is in Times Square-South so I'm sure we'd do a few Times Square activities, and Rockefeller is a MUST.

We've done the Soho and Village scene before, so we may try the other areas.

    Thanks again :)

  • The singing diner packs you in so tight you are practically eating with the people next to you.  It's just to damn close in there for my liking.  It's a fire hazard.
  • Mom and i are going mid Dec for Rockettes. We always hit Rockafeller Center and watch skaters and the beautiful light show. We always go to Rue 57 after the show for cosmos and fabu food then go out and spend way too much money drunk-shopping! I love looking at the awesome windows at this one store, i never remember the name, it's right by the Plaza. Really high end department store.

This year, since we are staying overnight i am going for a ride thru central park, some more shopping, and overall fun. i never like to try to tackle too much of the city at once, so we'll stay between MSG and the Park.

  • A carriage ride through central park, rockefeller center, tiffany's, drinks at the bull and bear (I think it is called), shopping on fifth ave, a broadway or off broadway show, and a million other things to do.
  • The fancy store the PP said is Berdof Goodmans.  Go in.  It's amazingly beautiful and you could potentially get some good sales on some home Christmas decorations.  I love it there.

I'd also like to suggest a little place for lunch or dinner in the Village (which I know you said you we're interested in but this is good) it's called Westville.  I went to the one in the West Village and it was about 4 blocks from Magnolia Bakery.  We put our name on the list then walked over to pick up cup cakes for dessert.  It was really good, cheap food that is all fresh.

I also like to go to St. Pats around Christmas.  It's so pretty.  I also love bridges (engineering dork in me) so I'd have to say a walk accross the Brooklyn Bridge is always great.  I've taken the subway to Brooklyn to the closest stop and walked back to Mannhatten.

    Have fun!

  • I got married in SJ and am from there, but I live in NYC now.  I live on the Upper East Side and love our neighborhood.  Tons of good restaurants, and museum mile runs along Central Park.  I suggest getting brunch somewhere and all the above things- but if you take a cab ride to Central Park and 5th Avenue around the 80s, there's a lot of nice shops/bakeries/restaurants.  Also-- Upper West Side is GORGEOUS- even nicer than UES, and just pretty to walk around.  I don't know a lot about it- but worth checking out!

    Enjoy!

  • Everyone else pretty much hit everything I could think of except the Museum of Sex. My bf and I did it a few years ago and actually had a blast. The exhibit changes all the time so you can look it up and see what is there.
