Adoption Lawyer Recs?

I'm going to try to make this as short as possible but, DH was adopted from birth through a private adoption and would like to now find his birth parents. He doesn't really know what he wants to do with the information when he finds it, but he'd like to at least have the ability to make the decision knowing he could reach out to them. And with the fact that children are in our near future, DH would also like to figure out his medical history. DH's mom has several older children from a previous marriage so from what they've told us and from what very little information MIL and FIL have offered (for some reason they seem very secrative about this adoption in fact they didn't tell him until he was 20), we can piece together a little bit of his birthparents. We've petitioned the court, but had no luck. I think we may be at the point of trying to find a lawyer who specializes in adoption and getting records opened.

Anyone have any recommendations? We are very uneducated on the whole adoption process and are currently trying to learn as much as we can about adoption and how it works.

Re: Adoption Lawyer Recs?

  • Have you checked with the Adoption board on the Bump?  It's mostly adoptive moms but there are a few birth moms & adoptees.

  • I have a friend who was successful in finding her birth mother through information learned on the web. I will ask her for the specific self help group that she used, but I know it was web based and she only paid for a few specific things.
  • Is the agency that coordinated his adoption still operating (not totally sure what you mean about private adoption)?  They might be able to contact his birth parents or give him some information.  I don't think you need a lawyer, I think that is more for adopting....

  • Irishbride- Whatever you can find out from your friend would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Meg- From what we know there was no agency involved. There was just a judge that oversaw the adoption and attorneys for each side. Perhaps I didn't use the term private adoption correctly.

  • Does he know the attorney or agency that his parents went through for the adoption? If so, he can contact them and they can assist him in contacting his birthparents (that is, if they updated their address information).
