WR: Question

WWYD if you found out last minute you couldn't attend a wedding? My cousin is supposed to watch Marino for us tomorrow so we can go to a wedding but now she has the flu (she's Headstart teacher, so it figures she's sick!). Its a long time we'd be gone (2:30-11:30) and we don't have anyone else who can watch him (at least not that we'd be comfortable watching him for that long). How do I handle this? Obviously, I'll email the bride and mail their gift ASAP. Anything else I should do? I feel bad.

Re: WR: Question

  • Well hopefully she hasn't already put her final count in.  But if she has, perhaps she can change it so that she doesn't get charged for 2 more plates that won't be there.  Is this the same wedding where you didn't want to leave Marino the whole time and also something about your food allergies right?

I would just call her up ASAP.  I mean, really, what else can be done?  These things happen.  And I think all brides know that some people won't be able to make it last minute.  And especially due to your circumstances!!

  • if the wedding is tomorrow, more than likely they have sent out their final count. like sarah said, i would call the friend asap and tell her about your situation. if she offers you take marino with you then problem solved?. perhaps, you can go to the ceremony and a cocktails and then leave? i dont know how close you are to the bride and how you feel comfortable offering to pay for the price per plate? i am sure she won't let you pay but it may be a good gesture?

agreed. I too would offer to pay for the dinner, I think it's a nice gesture.

  • I don't know that I'd call her.  I remember being SO busy the day before, and we had a larger wedding (150), so unless the person canceling was actually involved someway, I'd rather them just send me an e-mail beforehand giving me the FYI.

Gift-wise, I would probably give enough to cover the cost of our plates, within reason (which is not something I usually intend to do... I just give according to the quality of our relationship).

Finally, if you and/or your family is close this person, I might try to send one of us (me or hubby) to at least part of the event.

  • I agree with pp that you might want to let the bride know asap, probably by phone is best?

Also, if the wedding is nearby, do you think maybe one of you guys can still go and come back early? Just so the bride loses 1 guest instead of 2? Dunno if that's an option for you guys though.

Tough situation though--sorry your cousin got sick too =/

  • We're definately not close (as in, I didn't know their last name until I got their wedding invitation) but I do like them a lot. One of us wouldn't want to go, since we don't know anyone else who will be there, so we wouldn't have fun. Maybe my cousin will be better tomorrow?
  • WE definitely need to meet up! I would totally offer to let you drop him off with DH and I since we are not going anywhere tomorrow... But since we don't know each other yet, that would not work! You are in Rockville, right? I think I remember that you are in MD? We are Bethesda, near the Temple at Old Georgetown and Huntington Pkwy.

In answer to your question... Just tell the bride and apologize. These things happen. It's not your fault. Bummer tho!
