m/s vent 2: i didn't know it could get this bad

I finally feel okay enough to type today. OMG, this past week was the most torturous week of my life. I literally threw up everything I *drank* (don't even talk about eating) to the point where I took a sip, wait a while to try to hold it down, and it would just come up 1hr later. Then I feel SO sick that I couldn't drink anything but I was still vomiting every hr. Sometimes it would be dry vomiting for a while followed by icky stuff that was probably digested hours ago (sorry if this is making anyone queasy). I just didn't know m/s could get THIS bad! I ended up having to go in to the infusion center at the hospital to get IVs since I was so dehydrated. I also tried to take Phenergan (which my dr prescribed but the vomiting still continued =/). I'm worried about nutrition as well but dr said it should be okay for now. I've also lost all the weight I've gained so far =( Everyone keeps saying m/s = healthy baby, but how can this possibly be healthy for us?!?

Okay, I'm done venting =P Thanks for listening. At least I can actually do something today (ie. use the computer) even if it's still in bed...

  • You poor thing!  If your medication isn't working, maybe ask about Zofran?  A friend had hyperemis gravidarum and took B6 to help with the nausea and zofran to help with the vomiting.
  • I'm so sorry you are going through this.  I don't have any advice because mine was never that bad.  I took b6 and got regular acupuncture to help...
  • Yuk! I hope you feel better soon. Sad

  • ugh, I am so sorry to hear about your terrible m/s!!  One of my best friends is currently pregnant, she is due in Jan. and now in her 2nd tri.  She also had just terrible, terrible m/s and food aversions throughout her 1st tri.  She couldn't eat anything for the longest time.  The smells of a long list of foods really bothered her (and she was in Greece for the the first 8 weeks of her pregnancy--lots and lots of weird foods and food smells there!!)

BUT the good news is that yeah, when she hit the 2nd tri it pretty much stopped and now she is back to normal, so you don't have too far to go!  They say that m/s is triggered by the surging hormones that your body is producing, so that's why it's considered "good" to have it; it means your body is producing a lot of what it needs to make a good home for baby.  Apparently having really bad m/s is also a signifier that you are having a boy, something about your body reacting to the foreign male chemistry in your body.  (it was true at least for my friend who is having a boy!)

  • Aw, I'm so sorry.  I only had one day of it and I was miserable.  I'm glad you're doing your best to stay healthy and hydrated... crossing my fingers that it lets up soon!

  • Oh no!  I'm sorry m/s is hitting you so hard.  I can't even imagine not being able to keep liquids down.  Sad  Hope it gets easier for you...
  • OK, I don't want to add to your worry but my m/s sounds a lot like yours. It lasted like 6 months. I actually ended up 20 lbs lighter than when 1st got k/u. I could not imagine how I could deliver an even semi-healthy baby like that but he is perfect. It totally sucks for you as baby mama, but it doesn't necessarily mean baby isn't getting what he/she needs. Weird, I know. I didn't eat for days at a time. H would actually force me to eat every few days and it would almost immediately come up from about 8 weeks til about 8 months. Somehow Matty got what he needed cuz he was born at 8lbs 2 oz. I can totally sympathize with how horrible you feel not only for yourself but for baby. My only advice is to listen to your intuition. You know when something is off. Even if it ends up being nothing it will calm your fears. And most docs(ER or my PCP) don't mind my neuorsis. Good Luck. HTH

  • P.S.--- Ur Husky babies are soooooooooo beautiful!
  • oh, Hanyi, I'm feeling for you, and I'll pray that you feel better soon!!  That sucks, I'm so sorry that it's so awful.
  • you poor thing!!! ask your doctor about zofran, I heard it is the miracle drug (unless that other drug you already tried was generic zofran???).  the m/s is from all the hormonal changes going on right now from the baby so at least you know the pregnancy is ok :) definitely keep an eye on your fluids and get IV fluids if you need to...but the zofran should make it so you can keep stuff down.  don't worry - like Jaime said, plenty of women have horrible m/s and still have a healthy baby! take care.
  • I'm glad you're feeling a little better today.  Ugh, morning sickness DOES suck and I'm so sorry that you've got it so bad.  Sad  I've had some but nothing severe like what you've gone through.  I've heard of some women having success with Zofran or Reglan while others haven't so I wonder if your doctor might be able to prescribe something else that might work better for you if this continues since the Phenergan didn't work.

I hope you start to feel better soon.  Honestly, I think I felt the worst right around that 9-10 weeks and have been feeling okay lately.  I also recently switched my prenatal vitamin to a children's chewable because I suspected that that was making me feel sick as well.  My 'morning sickness' got worse at night, usually after about 20-30 mins after taking the vitamin and I'd have to throw up before going to bed.  It was not fun at all, bleech.

I'll be sending you 'go away morning sickness!!' vibes to you!  Feel better soon!

  • Thanks for all the vibes and suggestions. Yeah, I had two drugs so far given to me by my dr (well it was actually the dr on call cuz my dr was out for most of the week) and it was Compazine and Phenergan. I thought I actually puked more on the drugs than off. But maybe Zofran will do the trick...I'll ask my dr about it. I just need to check if insurance covers it b/c MH said that it's used for chemo patients and it's expensive?

I also got scared about using too much meds while pg too since both Compazine and Phenergan were Class C drugs...

Anyway I really hope it goes away soon! I'm on disability from work for a month now b/c I've been bedridden for the past week =(
