And yay for Hawai'i!

If you haven't already read the NY Times article... awesome.

Re: And yay for Hawai'i!

  • That is a great article, I hadn't seen it.  Thanks for sharing--I just shared it on my FB as well.

Though I'm not sure I agree with the insurance being tied to employer thing, it still seems like a better system than anywhere else right now.

  • Wow, interesting!

Living here and being self-employed (and middle-class), I can't say I have such a rosy outlook on our health care system.  It's difficult to get quality insurance for affordable prices when you don't have a large umbrella organization negotiating the plans and rates for you.  I am paying through the nose for my coverage, but, of course, there's no way you can go without it.

DH and I are also concerned about how $$$ it will be to cover both me and our baby when he/she arrives.  He gets free coverage, but to cover the two of us on his plan, we'll have to shell out $700/month. Ouch.

And, as the article mentioned, there is also a huge problem with employers keeping part-timers under 20-hours/week just to avoid the mandated coverage. I've had a few friends struggle with that as they tried to return to work after losing their jobs.  One friend even had an prospective employer offer her 19 paid hours a week and require her to "volunteer" additional hours to complete her work.  Can you believe that?!

But it's reassuring to know that things could definitely be worse elsewhere... and that we are being so "efficient."  As a state, we don't usually get praised for that latter fact!  Stick out tongue

So I'm all for some kind of health care reform, even within our state.  For my family, it can't happen soon enough.

  • wow. that is interesting. also living here, i wouldn't say the people here are the picture of health.  maybe lingle paid them to run that article...lol.

i work for a mainland company and we do get ridiculously cheap benefits, as in, i pay $17/paycheck for me and my husband...so about 34/mo!

i have yet to use my benes so i don't know what the actual system is like.  i go to a naturopath and unfortunately, hawaii is super un-progressive and doesn't include acupuncture or alternative medicine in their benefits.  in seattle, it is mandated that companies that are based in wa provide massage and acupuncture benes.

lola--that really sucks about your benes...self employed in this state really do get the shaft. the state is very unfriendly to small biz Sad

  • Yeah, it's great, if you can get employers to cooperate.  My part-time job at a local retailer (big department store chain), will not schedule me for more than 18 hours, I imagine for this very reason.  Although I am welcome to take extra shifts, they don't count towards getting me health insurance.  :-/

  • Informative article.  Thanks for sharing it.

that is SO lame!  the new unemployment insurance premiums are supposed to raise from $90/employee to about $400/employee...this is going to crush small biz and force them to do crap like schedule employees less than 20 hours...grrrrr.
