Anyone have a netbook?

Our 5+ y/o computer has been freezing up almost constantly and this weekend it started making some terrible noises so I think it's time for something newer & better.  All we do with the computer is browse the internet, check email, and print out a few things.  I think we're only using about 15-20% of the hard drive but it seems like more b/c the thing is so old and slow. Someone suggested we get a netbook.  I know they're not as powerful as a desktop or laptop, but how are they really for browsing the internet?  Will everything load farily quickly?  We have Roadrunner (but even that seems slow thanks to our computer).  I think my biggest worry is that I'll feel like we have dial-up again.

Re: Anyone have a netbook?

  • DH does, he has the Verizon one for work, but b/c the unlimited data plan is so expensive, they only pay for the limited data plan.  When he's here at home, he uses our regular wireless to access the internet so to not use up his work data allotment.  The netbook is okay speed-wise, but it really took some getting used to because of the size of the keyboard and the touchpad.  He likes it now, especially when we have to travel.

  • I answered this on the baby board.... but I forgot to add...

As Mrsjacinthe said, the size does take a bit to get used to.. I don't mind the keyboard.. but when I go from my laptop to my netbook I do notice what I miss in screen size.

  • I use one when I travel, but the size is something you have to get used to. I would suggest also looking at the notebooks they sell as refurbs at Microcenter. I have one as well as most of my family members. They are about 400 bucks and will do almost everything you need. I always get a warranty, but it does come with a short one. They always have them linked on their website as well.
  • Thanks for the Microcenter tip.  I always forget about them and I don't have an issue with refurb.
