social security office in york
i need to change my last name, but since they don't answer their phone, i thought i'd post here.
do i need to make an appointment or can i just walk-in? what do i need to take with me?
Re: social security office in york
I was just there in August. No, you do not need to make an appointment...first come, first serve. When you walk in the building, make a right towards the wall, there'll be a touch-screen computer and you'll have to select a # (its 1 or 2 depending on why your there)...there's a secuirty guard there that helped me. Then you just wait for your # on the ticket to be called. I'm not sure what the other people were there for, but I was called rather quickly and to this back room. So when you see the huge line of people waiting, you might get lucky like I did and get called seperately from them. I think they have a seperate calling area for people collecting benefits. Anyway, what I brought (I brought more than I had to, to be safe): the ORIGINAL marriage license, driver's license, birth certificate (this has to be original or certified copy) and my social security card (just in case). OH and I brought with me the filled out application to change my name.
Here's the link that tells you everything you need to bring and the application.
