Ok, last time I ask this question...

I forgot to save my last post that you all so generously helped me with, but I'm afraid I need to ask again Embarrassed

MH and I are going to purchase a DSLR tonight for our trip to Kauai (leaving this Friday...jealous??) ;)  This will be my first time purchasing one as I currently use the Cannon P&S for my everyday use.  What are your DSLR reccomendations for someone who is tranisitioning from a P&S?  I think we will be using this for our everyday camera, but just want better quality pictures...especially for those amazing sunsets ;)

Thanks again and I PROMISE this will be the last time I ask this ;)

Re: Ok, last time I ask this question...

  • MH and I were the same as you, had a great Canon P&S but wanted something "more".  We bought our DSLR a few years ago now, the model is a Nikon D50 and we love it.  It was really easy to transition from the P&S to the DSLR, too.  They no longer make the Nikon we have, it's now the Nikon D60 (link is for the CDN site, sorry).  Btw, I would either go with a Nikon or Canon DSLR.  Good luck with what you decide and yes, I am soooo jealous of your trip Smile

  • Nikon and Canon both make great dslrs AND lenses so you really can't go wrong with either choice.  I don't know if you'll have time to make it to a store that carries the cameras you're considering but it might be a good idea to check them out in person if possible.  You'll find that size and weight differ from camera to camera and you'll want what feels the best in your hands.  Smile

*swoon* This is what I have my eye on. I don't care much about the video (we don't do much of that kind of recording) but I'm in love with everything else about it.... *sigh*

What lenses did you get, Melissa?

Right now I only have the 18-105 VR that came with the kit.  (MH got it for me).  My mom has an older Nikon, however, so I've played around with her wide-angle lens a bit.

I've found the 18-105 VR to meet all of my needs so far, but suppose that one day I'll want to expand.

  • I had this dilemma for awihle when deciding what to upgrate to from our P&S. Like Lisa said, the best thing that you could do is go to a place that sells camera and pick them up, feel the weight of them, how the buttons feel from how you're feeling the camera, etc.

I ended up getting a Canon Rebel T1i and i LOVE it! It still has a lot of the features of the 50D (the line that is slightly highter than the Rebel Series) AND it shoots video in HD! So I love having both features on there in case something comes up when i'm out and about that I really want to capture on video.

dpreview.com is a great website full of resources! Check it out =D

Oops, I meant "holding" not "feeling" the camera. haha

Interesting! All of the reviews I've read on forums say that the 18-105VR isn't a great lens and that you should pay extra for a different one, but honestly I was thinking of going with that one anyway (it's in most of the kits here too) just because I don't think I'll need a better/more expensive lens for a while - I think that one will work fine until I have more experience (which most of the people posting on forums have, and that's why I think they don't recommend that particular lens). So I'm glad you like it, I'm feeling a bit better about not wanting to upgrade the lens right away when I do buy the camera!

I think that's exactly right; some of my snobby photog friends told me to get a different lens right away, but the unpretentious ones who still know what they're talking about told me to stick with the 18-105VR until I outgrew it.  I took their advice and it's worked out.  Then again, I don't take a whole ton of pictures.  Maybe if I was training to go semi-pro I'd feel differently, but it really is just a hobby for me.

I have more photos of my pugs than you could ever imagine.  ;)

Yes! This is exactly the thing! I'm not going to be trying to take pro photos or anything like that - it's just a hobby I enjoy. I tend to mostly photograph things like our pets lol, and only want to upgrade from our point and shoot because I want to be able to take nice (non-pro, but nice) photos of our babies after they're born.

I guess I was just really surprised at how many people said that the 18-105 was a POS and a waste of money...which I guess it might be for someone shooting at a much more advanced level, but I just can't justify dropping that kind of cash on an upgrade when it's unlikely that I'd even be able to really use the extra goodness that the upgrade will bring for a long time.

  • I love my Canon Rebel!  You definitely can't go wrong with either Nikon or Canon.  I agree with pp (Lisa???) that you should try going to a store that carries both (like Best Buy) and see which feel better in your hands.  The Canon felt more comfortable in my hands while taking photos so I went with the Canon.
