Sorry for all the baby talk - I know it can get annoying when you're not knocked up, so I promise this will be my last baby-related post for the day! (Maybe even the week.
)
I'm still looking into the whole cloth diaper thing (I still don't know if we'll be able to talk a daycare into using them, but I'm crossing my fingers and doing my research anyway) and I have to say, I'm a bit overwhelmed.
I know there are a few basic kinds: prefolds, inserts and all-in-ones (am I missing some? probably lol). What I don't know is why people choose one kind over another - I know some people get more than one kind so they can experiment, but it seems like others are pretty much just going with one type. I'm unsure why one kind is better than another, or rather, why people end up preferring one type over another (since they're not necessarily better, just different).
So help a girl out: what kind of cloth diaper(s) are you using and why did you choose that type?
Bonus question: if your little one is already born (hence the diapers are being used), are you happy with your choice or would you want to try a different kind?
Re: so since today is a day of diapers and wipes...
I am using a little of everything
for daycare - I will send pre-stuffed pockets. I didn't go with all in ones because I have read pockets dry a lot faster, and you can adjust the absorbancy. Some DCP around here will use prefolds/covers but I didn't want to have to seek those out - and I have heard that many will require a new cover at each change. I'm pretty sure we will use the daycare at my work and they have babies there in AIO and pockets already. I didn't want to "teach" them how to use prefolds and I like that they will just throw the whole thing in my wetbag.
home - for the newborn/infant stage I bought prefolds because they are cheap and you change so many diapers at this age.
I also bought some fitteds for the newborn stage just in case MH has problems with prefolds or something.
I also have some fitteds for after newborn age. I will use these at home (not at daycare, mostly because it involved another step - the cover).
I am knitting wool covers (soakers and longies) and bought a mix of PUL covers in newborn and small so far.
I think some of it is just plain personal preference... I see on the diaper forums people saying "I'm just not feeling the _____(prefold, pocket, fitted, AIO, etc)____ love" so to me that is just individual preference
for newborns the most economical option is prefolds (with cover) b/c they go through so many diaper changes per day and grow so fast... to have a full stash of other diapers would be very expensive
when they get bigger part of it is just personal preference. a lot of people hate AIOs b/c they take FOREVER to dry...sometimes 1.5-2 hrs on HIGH in the dryer. but there are AIOs with a soaker sewn in on one side (sposoeasy) or AI2s where you can unsnap the soaker (grobaby, bottombumpers) for quicker drying... I hear some people say they don't like soakers that aren't sewn all the way in and from looking at them I have no idea why b/c to me it looks just the same except you have this flap that you have to make sure is down before you put the baby in it.
I have read that some mamas don't like pockets b/c they don't like pulling out an insert that is soaked in urine or poop - and I honestly haven't gotten any pockets (though I have one thirsties AIO with optional pocket to insert a doubler for added absorbancy to try) b/c to me that just sounds gross too. And with pockets you have to stuff them before you can use them...so one extra step
A lot of mamas seem to like fitteds..they are like AIOs but not waterproof so you still need a cover....sort of. a lot of fitteds are so absorbant (and cute!) that no one wants to cover them up and they let their babies go in the house coverless and only use covers when going out and about
then there is also the issue of trimness.... some people want something really trim where their baby's bottom doesn't look HUGE in the diapers...cloth diapers in general are never going to be as trim as disposables but certain CD's are more trim than others
and then there is the fact that each baby has a different body shape. some have chunky legs, some are skinny minnies, some of long and thin waists, some of short and narrow waists and particular diaper brands (and types) will work better for some vs others. so part of it isn't what's better out there, it's more what's better for your baby....
i know how you feel, I felt soooooooooo overwhelmed when i first started and wasn't sure if I was up for it...but the more I read about it and the more time on spend in the diaperswappers forum and other sites, the better I felt about it. (if you navigate around http://greenmountaindiapers.com/index.htm, you'll find lots of good general CD'ing info along with product info)
most daycare will do cloth diapers, but the majority will only do AIOs b/c they are most like disposables... they just have to throw the dirty diapers in a bag instead of the trash for you.
i think you should totally do it...with twins, think of how much you'd save!!

Wow Jaime, thanks for all the info! I'm definitely bookmarking this post so I can refer back to it.
Oh, and I have to admit that this:
is EXACTLY why I'm looking into it so much. I really, really wish I could say it was for environmental reasons first, but it's not - it's solely because calculating how much we'd spend on disposables each year for two babies nearly gave me a heart attack.
I'm thinking we may still use disposables to begin with (depends on how preemie they are, if at all, since I've read that disposables work better in the very small sizes), but after that, I'd really like to switch to CDs if we can do it.
there are preemie prefolds that you can get!!!! GMD makes 'em
plus if you have CDing questions the diaperswappers forum is a great place to ask them... you can also learn a lot just scrolling through existing posts.
