Gestational diabetes test question

Do they make you sit in the bio lab for an hour?  Do you know if they will let you go sit in your car?  I don't really want to sit in a waiting room with sick people!

 Thanks

Re: Gestational diabetes test question

  • I was given a timer and then told to wait in the waiting room.  I think if you ask them ahead of time they will probably let you sit elsewhere just as long as you are back on time.
  • They made me wait with my first two pregnancies.  I am hoping this time around I hope they let me wait elsewhere...like you I don't really feel like sitting there with a bunch of sick people.
  • I was told that I was not allowed to leave because it was a liability. I think it will totally depend on the person working. You could put on a mask if you are concerned.
  • For the one-hour test, I just sat in the waiting room... For the three hour test I wasn't allowed to leave the hospital room.
  • Hello fellow Jan-baby!

I'm doing mine for the first time next week. I have my OB's appointment at 8:30am...what I was told is that I go first to my OB, "sign in, pee on stick etc" and then go downstairs to the lab and drink the liquid then back upstairs to see the Dr. and I'm allowed to wait in the OB's waiting room (safer) and once it's almost 1 hr back downstairs to complete the test.

I know it sounds like a lot but I'd rather wait on the comfy chairs & aournd other PG women who are also scared of getting sick..LOL

  • I did mine last week and had to wait in the waiting room. maybe go at a time (like late morning) when the lab is less apt to have lots of people? I went at 9am and at the end of my hr, I was alone in the waiting room

I went last week and I was allowed to sign myself out.  I had my husband with me and they made a comment about being allowed to leave if you have someone with you.

Being cold and flu season, I don't think it's unreasonably to request to sit in your car.  For the most part, they just want to ensure you're not being active, are back in an hour and that if you vomit, you start over again.

    Good luck.

  • I was not allowed to leave at all, she set the timer and I had to wait.  For the three hour test I also had to wait so I brought a good book.  My DH was with me both times and he was not even allowed to leave with me, they said it could do something to the results and it was a liability as well.  GL.
