Really dumb BR question. . .
I'm going to sound like a complete ditz by asking this, but I have to do it.
I've been looking at different baby wipes recently and noticed that the brand we bought from Costco says "hypoallergenic and alcohol free," whereas the Huggies wipes we have does NOT say alcohol free. Does this mean that they have alcohol in them?
I've also been looking at Seventh Generation baby wipes which say they are chlorine free, so am I to assume that other wipes have chlorine in them, or is this a marketing technique used to get suckers like me to spend more on baby wipes?
I'm humiliated, but please help.

Not a dumb question...keep in mind that a lot of manufacturers intentionally do (or don't) include this kind of labelling, either to confuse the issue or to try to make their product seem different when it's really not. I would say that generally speaking, if a wipe doesn't claim to be alcohol free, then it's probably not, and the same may go for chlorine (which IS a common chemical in wipes). Here's some extra info courtesy of this website:
The whole chemical thing is why a lot of parents are starting to simply use cloth wipes (literally just a soft cloth dipped in water), which is about as natural as it gets. A lot of babies actually have problems with the chemicals in wipes - they can cause rashes on sensitive skin.
But of course, cloth wipes aren't very handy for when you're outside the house, in which case something like Seventh Gen is probably the best you can get - otherwise, just look for something with as few of those four chemicals as you can get.
oh but you can do cloth wipes on the go!! just put a small spray bottle in your diaper bag... and then get a super cute wet bag!!!! yet another cute baby accessory you can get
some moms like using a wipes solution but honestly a large majority find that just warm water works best!! we will start out using water and if i'm not happy with that i may add some baby shampoo into it..and then if i'm not happy w/that then i will try some of the wipes solutions that are out there (punkin booty bits and kissaluvs diaper potion are both popular)

I have used Pampers, Huggies pure & natural and Seventh Generation wipes...... I like Seventh Gen best by FAR!!! Plus I think they are better on baby's bum. I think the Huggies ones give her a red bum.
That said, I HATE the Seventh Gen diapers!!!!

Yeah, I could never do the cloth and water - it takes way too long. My BIL and his wife did this system for at least 3 months that I can remember and just seemed like such a progress. When they were on the go, they just pre-wet the clothes and put them in a Ziploc.
I started with Seventh Generation wipes but didn't love them. They are not very soft and are the smallest wipes that I've used by far...not very environmentally friendly if you have to use to 2 to 1.
Then we tried Earth's Best wipes - same vain as Seventh Generation but they were a ton bigger AND softer.
Then I tried Pampers Sensitive (no aloe...the fragrance free one) and it works the best for us. They are the softest AND strongest of the three that I've tried and they are way less expensive.
That's great to know! The brand from Costco is by Kirkland and it's called Tencel, I think. It's hypoallergenic, alcohol free, unscented and made of all natural fiber. AND it's wayyyyyyyyyyy cheaper than huggies or pampers.
Thanks also for the info. re: cloth wipes. Very interesting and eco-friendly (and much, much cheaper, I'm sure), but I'm not entirely sure if we're ready to go that route yet...

haha - did not mean the spray bottle was for the baby's bottom - it is for the wipes if you don't want to pre-moisten them as they can get damp and icky if you don't use them quickly enough. you can then wet the wipes right before changing the diaper w/o needing a water source like a sink.
but i agree that it doesn't really make sense for someone who is using sposies... but if you are using CDs you just throw them all together in the wet bag. some wipes are double sided...more rough on one side to get most of the mess off and then soft on the other side to "finish the job" so to speak
