So CDing ladies, I have been doing some research and think I am going to attempt to CD.
I am thinking I will need about 4-6 diaper covers so that I only have to wash every 3 days. Thoughts? How many prefold? I am going to go with the Green Mountain ones since they have a great resale value. Regarding AIO, have you checked out Gro Baby? They can be AIO or like those gDiapers (the disposable insert is brand new).
So, which covers are you ladies using? I am thinking I like the Bummis Super Whisper Wraps? Thoughts?
Also, those of you who purchased used diapers, where did you find them?
TIA!!
Re: BR: Cloth Diaper Covers
let's see if I can take a stab at this...
I got the green mountain prefolds - they washed up wonderfully, nice and think/quilt-y. The sizes are supposed to make them really easy to use.
As far as covers you can get PUL or wool. PUL is much easier to care for - Thirsties get the best reviews and they have a new design that is size adjustable thirsties duos
I actually bought a mixture: thirsties, bummis, imse vimse, a couple of prorap for newborn stage, and a cute olive jane (etsy). I am also knitting some wool covers and longies.
As for number of covers I have read 4-6 is good. 6 is recommended when they are still in the EBF/runny poo stage. If the cover is not soiled you can reuse. You can even rinse non-soiled, dry and reuse if it got a little wet.
my mom and I would buy them anywhere there was a discount code and/or free shipping. The store I linked to has free shipping for all covers.
also, I have a couple gro babies. Obviously I haven't used them, so take this for what it's worth.
They don't get great reviews on the EFF board, but that could be because they are new and people have found other things that work. My mom bought 2 from a local store because they were running a special - buy 2, get a free extra pack of inserts. I really like the natural fiber inserts (they are SOFT) but the cover part is really nothing new, it's basically like using a snap-in insert inside a cover (much like folding in a prefold). I think if the diaper was just a wet diaper you would be able to reuse the cover and snap in a new set of inserts, which would be nice.
I would be interested in your review if you buy a couple!
good for you - I can't wait to CD our DD
for covers 4-6 is good but if you only plan to trifold your PFs and not snappi/pin them then you will soil more covers from the runny EBF poo (assuming you are BFing). cover choice seems to vary from mom to mom but the BSWW are popular, and the thirsties are very popular too. i got the thirsties duos since they are almost one size - there are only 2 sizes...not sure how big Ashton is but you may only need size 2 b/c size 1 goes up to about 15lbs. covers are easy to wash though...you can hand wash and hang to dry and they are quick to dry
for PFs I would get 2 dozen if you want to wash every other day or every 2 days. I have the GMDs and the Little Lions seems popular too but you are right in that the GMDs have great resale. they are heavy to ship though ($8-10) so the prices you'll find them used are about equal to the price new, less shipping. the unbleached are super soft and if you want to splurge get the organic - so nice!
I have 2 grobaby's to try out but obviously can't tell you how I like them yet. they just came out with biodegradable soakers that you can use while traveling so that is nice. they seem to get pretty good reviews - generally better than gDiapers - on DS (diaperswappers.com) which is where I got all my used diapers. I think I only have 2 new diapers for DD that were on sale....everything else was used...but I made sure to get ones that were barely used so that they still have a lot of life left in them. with PFs it's not so much of a big deal b/c those will last through 3-4 babies but with AIOs it will make a difference. you have to spend some time on the FSOT (for sale or trade forums) on DS to find some of these deals on newer diapers but it's worth it to me
one thing I have learned from frequenting DS is that some babies do ok with synthetic fibers and some get rashes...plus the synthetics have a tendency to get stinky and need to be stripped occasionally (the problem with regular bumgenius diapers - aside from the tabs curling and aplix going bad so quickly)...so I am trying to go with all natural fibers. the down side to that is that the baby doesn't stay dry but if you read the GMD website, that really isn't that bad anyway.
so for AIOs that we are trying that are all natural cotton fibers, we are trying Grobaby, sposoeasy, bumgenius organic one-size, very baby, and bottombumpers.
I also got one goodmama fitted diaper to try b/c everyone raves about them and they are so darn cute
I've read from independent reviews that they are so great that they are even worth the $35 price tag that comes w/them new. You can get gently used ones on DS for $16-20 though (just make sure they are still soft and not sherpa yet - those should sell for less) and you can often get ones that still new in pkg for less than the $35 price tag (there was a recent 50% sale on them and a lot of people bought them and are re-selling them)
on rare occasion you'll find a deal on used diapers on craigslist but there really aren't enough moms CDing for there to be much of a selection on there...doesn't hurt to check though b/c I got 10 yellow edge GMD prefolds (organic!!!) on there for $12 which is a steal! overall though I found that you'll find a greater selection and better deals on diapers on DS.
well, i hope that answers your questions, I am obviously no expert b/c I have no real experience, but I have done a lot of research in preparation of our LO's arrival so feel free to ask any other questions!

Good for you Renee!
We are going with PFs and covers to start...I might try some different AIOs and see what we like. BumGenius3.0 seems to be a huge favorite for CDers.
For covers, we're using Thirsties Wraps (size S and XS) and I also got one Duo in the smaller size as well as a Bummis Whisper Wrap (got second hand). I got all of ours from MomsMilkBoutique.com, including the unbleached Indian prefolds.
Jaime is the queen of Diaper Swapers and can give you tons of info. on that!
