Cheap Christmas gift ideas?

I know it's a little early but I'm planning ahead :) Both of our families are doing limited Christmas gifts this year b/c of the wedding a week later and my sister and the baby.  We want to just enjoy it all and not stress over the gifts.  Our parents keep saying "No" gifts but I can't give them nothing so I'm trying to think of some cheap but cute thing to do for them.

Any suggestions?

Re: Cheap Christmas gift ideas?

  • Last year I remember seeing glass jars with ingredients for baking in the jar, layered. Or ingredients for hot cocoa. Then you can tie a cute ribbon around it.
  • Cake in a jar is super easy!

I'm doing a lot of canning, I'm also making home made organic bath stuff, also cake in a jar, and a lot of little stuff like that.

  • Scrapbooks or other photo gifts (frames,  album, etc).  My parents love getting pictures, especially when I dig up old photos from our childhood and put them together.

Edible gifts are always good, cookies, treats, cakes...or maybe you could make a few nights worth of dinners and freeze them.  The gift would be not only the dinners but also the time they get to spend enjoying themselves at night rather than cooking.

  • We're in the same boat... DH and I are trying to keep gifts reasonable since his family is so large.

I need to do some research, but I was thinking about doing homemade truffles and homemade wine for DH's aunts and uncles. If the 'homemade' part doesn't work out for the wine, I'll buy a nice bottle.

I think it's silly to buy Christmas gifts for aunts and uncles. I'd rather spoil the crap out of the nieces and nephews who truly enjoy Christmas and "still believe!"

  • For quick and inexpensive gifts I usually hit up the homegoods section of TJ Maxx or Marshalls and grab a bunch of fun things.  Last year I did a photo album, stationary, 2 wine glasses, and wine tags in a basket for just over $10.
  • Last year we got my FIL a gift card to omaha steaks. He loved it and all year we've been invited over for steak dinners!
You could also get a book they've wanted or a movie, they are too expensive either.
  • i love getting new winter plants to brighten my house!

  • Erin: We've made wine and you can get it ready for next year but it's a process and would never be done for this Christmas (You have to let it sit).  We make limoncello also which we just started as part of our groomsmens gifts and that's easy to make.

I might do a little "homemade" gift basket thing, that sounds cute and simple, or even something involving photos

  • My fiance makes both beer and wine and while it is a process, there are some wines that are ready in a month or two.  You could definitely make wine that's ready in time for Christmas and if not, soon after.
