Poll: exercise

Oka, I admit it.....I've been quite the little sloth since my wedding three months ago.  I quit my gym ( I hated it there and my contract was finally up!), and I didn't even get out and walk/bike/swim as much this summer as I usually do.  I've been sooooo lazy!

Today finally got off my butt and went for a five mile bike-ride (not super-long, no but a good start!).....it felt great!  But the weather here in Chicago is turning quickly, so a bike-riding regimen will not work for long.  I need to shake things up and find a new way to exercise that I enjoy.

I'm wondering what people do for exercise, especially in winter months (assuming you live where there is a winter).  I need something new this winter!

Re: Poll: exercise

  • I picked the last one. Even before I was knocked up, I didn't do much. I go for a 30 minute walk during my lunch break every day with a coworker - that's pretty much the only defined exercise I get. Otherwise, I tend to be on my feet and moving and walking for the majority of the day, so I tend to be too exhausted by the time I get home to workout (not a good excuse, but it's the truth, and I just cannot exercise in the morning - I just can't Stick out tongue).
  • i've been slothlike lately :(  i chose the first option only because i go to the gym everyday to take a shower after my bike ride...lol.

i ride my bike to and from work ~6 mi, not a great workout but enough to make me feel justified to have dessert :)

dh and i have just made a pact that starting on wednesday we will be getting up at 5am to hit the gym in our building...woohoo.

  • John bought me a gym membership after we got married and sad to say, I think it's only been used for a total of about 2 months....and we're quickly coming up on our 2 year anniversary.  Stick out tongue  I get bored with gym workouts because the environment is boring.  When I was in the best shape of my life, I'd take 90 minute walks 5 times a week.  It became a routine and that's what I liked about it.  End work at 5, change into my walking clothes, head outside and walk, and then drive home after rush hour traffic had died down.  It was perfect.

Then I moved to Japan where the summers were so unbearably hot and humid and the winters soooo cold that I didn't want to exercise outside.  There wasn't a gym in my small town and I also had no car to drive somewhere else.  I can see how the seasons could totally affect exercise habits....

Now we do 4-mile walks with some friends twice a week and a yoga session with another friend once a week.  I haven't been feeling well because of morning sickness so I haven't done it in a few weeks but I think the ms is going away so I hope to get back into the routine again!

Maybe it would help if you partnered up with a friend and arranged to meet at the gym or take a class together.  When it's just John and I, it's easy to be lazy and say, 'Let's go tomorrow...' but when someone else is there and depending on us to be there, it becomes a little harder to bail out.  Stick out tongue

  • I picked the last option, too.  We had a gym membership, but could never manage to get there at a good time.  When we got there, the place would be packed to the gills, and it just stressed me out even more.  So we've been pretty darn sloth-like.  In the winter, in Ohio, I would either go to a class (at a gym) or walk around the mall (no, not like the power walking grandparents out there, just *walking* - figured it was better than nothing).

That said we (God help us) just bought a Bowflex (the "cheap" $600 version).  It is now taking up space in our spare bedroom.  DH likes it, I am still undecided.  Have an injured back so haven't really been able to use it much...

  • I just joined a gym that I absolutely love.  And, seriously, it is insane for me to even type that.  Me?  Love a gym?  It cannot be!  But the classes are amazing and include strength training, which I love.  I (try to) go to the strength training classes 3 times a weeks and a heavy cardio class twice a week.
  • I chose the last option too Embarrassed

even before I was PG I did not get much exercise...i wish i did but i always just put it off. the most i can do sometimes is some light weights while i am watching TV to work out my arms.  i am on my feet a lot at work so i guess i "walk" a little more than people with desk jobs but that is about it.  i would take the dog for walks but it's either too hot or too cold for me here in Dallas... it's only nice in the spring.

I would love to exercise more and be healthier but alas, I'd always rather do other things like be a couch potato and watch tv, or bake and eat my goodies!!! unfortunately even the motivation of a smoother/faster delivery has not been enough to get me exercising during this PG :(

  • For the 5 1/2 years we lived in Boston, I was a member of our local Y, which was about a 5-10 minute walk from our house.  Before that when I lived in Brooklyn I was a member of the local Y too.  The fees tend to be quite reasonable and I love the facilities and community atmosphere in the place.  (Although, I think it certainly depends where you live--some are better than others.)  I am a runner primarily and while I love to run outside when the weather is nice I have a hard time running in the cold (or snow or ice) of which there is a lot in Boston in the winter months.  My Y in Boston also had a very nicely heated pool, which I often enjoyed swimming in on cold winter days, it was very nice and warm to be in the water, and made me feel like I was home (Hawaii).

There are so many things you can do at your gym too, like take classes.  I had never taken a gym class before but leading up to our wedding I took an amazing total fitness kind of class with a great teacher, and I felt so fantastic after three months of classes. Can you hop around and use trial periods to see if you can find a gym you like that is not too far from your home or office?  Then I would experiment with some of the different classes, you might find something new that you really like.

  • I chose the first option, but my gym habits when it gets cold aren't as good as my walking habits while it's nice outside (60-90 minutes, 3-5 times per week).  We live in an apartment and have a gym in our complex, so that's the gym we use in the winter.  I always tell myself that if I get into a good habit of going to our gym, I'll entertain the idea of paying to join a larger gym so that I can mix in some classes and maybe see about getting a trainer (if it comes to that!).

  • We don't own a car, so I we walk everywhere for daily stuff like groceries and whatnot, but other than that not much.

Though I may be forced to endure a staff badminton tournament today. Apparently I'm paired up with a gym teacher who's crazy competitive... and I don't even know the rules of badminton. I'm trying to see if I can get out of it...

  • Before I was KU... I...

-- Ran. As in marathons, half marathons, 10 milers, ect.

-- I also went to classes, like bar method, kickboxing and yoga

-- And I went to the gym, but not consistently, depended what my running training sked called for

-- I worked with a personal trainer (weights) while training for the Marine Corps marathon

    When I was KU... I...

    -- Ran until 20 weeks

-- Did yoga until the last two months, when I did NOTHING!!

    Now, I...

-- Breastfeed... Walk... Will find out tomorrow if I can exercise again!!!!!

  • I sadly fell of the exercise train since the wedding over a year ago!  I was very dilligent in working out for the days up to the wedding and successfully lost 19 lbs, but I have gained it all back just a little over a year later.  I have just recently started up again, but it's been very sparatic.  Once we get back from our vacation I will make it more a priority since I have now reached my "a-ha" moment and I know I need to start making some lifestyle changes here.

I think I have had fun for way too long of eating and being lazy, now it's time to get back at it!  Stick out tongue

  • I said I go to the gym but my gym offers a whole variety of classes and I probably go to classes over just doing treadmill/weights/pool so I should have said classes.

I actually go in the nice weather too because going to class ensures I will get a good workout and because they are at set times I usually just write it on my calendar and then would feel guilty if I didn't go so I have better success that way.

  • Uh, I feel bad saying this, but we don't really have cold weather in LA.  Actually, at the coldest in recent years, it's been 32, but usually it's 50s, maybe 40s?, at the coldest.

I wear a headband type thing so it covers my ears, because I get an awful ear pain when I run in colder weather.

I exercise at the gym and I love swimming!  I'm part of this ocean swimming Meetup group here, but I haven't gone yet.  I ocean swam with the H before the tri, but now I just swim laps at the pool mostly.  I swam 29 laps at the pool yesterday, it took me almost an hour but it felt so amazing!!!

I'm also starting this exercises DVD at home that the H had from a while ago - it's called Slim in 6, and it kicks my butt.  I have to say I like exercise videos at home, I think it's a good alternative when it's cold outside.  I bet the H&F board would have some good recommendations for videos.  Good luck!

  • I hate weather.  Seriously, my temperature comfort window is from, like, 73 to 83 degrees.  I consider even a breeze to be "wind," and I really really hate wind.  And I live in Seattle, so exercising outside is usually out of the question for me.

I belong to a gym that I really do love.  MH and I usually get into the early morning gym routine around this time of year.  (Haven't quite gotten there yet though).  And my work has exercise facilities inside that I sometimes use at lunch when I'm not too busy.  If I didn't have access to those facilities I would probably buy a treadmill for my house.  (I actually find treadmills to be meditative).

ditto!  I think this includes a lot of people here.  I have never lived in an area that had so many athletic center type gyms.  When I was in AZ you could join a gym, but stuff like classes, sport courts, and lap pools were usually not included.

  • My answer is a combination of #1, #3 & #4. I work out during lunch time in
the gym across the street from my office. I either take group classes (spin class or circuit training; used to do zumba, step and kickboxing but they don't offer them anymore) or just run on treadmill or use the elliptical machine. 2x a week after work, I also meet with my trainer. I train with one or two people (depending on their availability for that day). For the days, I can't go to the gym (mostly on weekends), I try to work out at home. I have Jillian Michael's videos. I try to work out 4-6x a week. With the way I eat, I have to!!! lol. There are a lot of times I have to drag my arse to the gym (umm like today lol). For me, it helps when I do group classes since I lack motivation to work out on my own lol.
  • I picked the last one, even though I used to be a competitive swimmer but I got too busy when MH and I got engaged (b/c I was going to grad school full-time, working part-time, and planning our wedding at the same time) and I never got back into it or exercising at all since then. So I've been super sedentary pretty much since our honeymoon and then after I got pg, I'm even more sedentary, and now that I'm suffering from severe m/s I'm bedridden. So I don't walk past the bathroom in our room now (let alone even go outside) so no exercise for me at all =(

But I live in California, so I used to swim all year round, even in the winter (outdoors). In Chicago (used to live there), they have only indoor pools anyway, so as long as you find a pool, you can swim all year round too. You can join a Masters Swimming group (which is the competitive group I was in). You don't even have to compete b/c each team usually have a competitive group and a group on the side that just swim laps for fun but they have practice at certain times and you get access to a pool and it's usually about $50/month (which is a good deal if you go 6 days/wk which is what I used to do). A lot of teams also have punch cards if you don't go that often. Or at least that's how all the teams I've swam with in California work. If you want more info: http://www.usms.org/

  • i picked the last option Sad  sigh.  i stopped running and doing any sort of exercise after my half-marathon and sprint tri this summer.  since then, i ran a 5k with annasan_k that kicked my butt, but that was it.  my company just moved into a new building that has a gym which started offering classes this week, so i'm going to try to commit to going to some of those.  ...heh.  "try to commit to some".  Stick out tongue  though when i was training for the half last january/february, i learned I didn't really mind running in the cold/snow - so i really should start running again, even though it's getting colder.  just so hard to motivate myself to do it alone...DH and I have very different exercise habits.  he uses the elliptical we have, which i hate.  i could also set up my bike trainer, which i haven't touched in years...

maybe i'll look into masters swimming - thanks for the link, inamra!

and pugrolls, your weather comment totally made me laugh Smile  DH is constantly making fun of me for being "too hot...too cold...too hot...too cold..."

  • my picks 2, 3, and 4-as some of you know surfing is my major passion so I surf as much as possible all year long-even in the winter which quite frankly is not my favorite.  However sometimes there is no surf, tides aren't right-too dark in the am-etc....so i mix things up-walk./jog on the beach, take a yoga class, take a spin class, plus i have series of different phyiscal therapy exercises that i do 3-5 times per week for strengthening-may invest in some video tapes this year especially as I just cancelled my gym membership-i found that i was better exercising on my own and only used the gym on the rare occasions that i could not surf or jog and that seemed to be a waste of money.  used to work out with a trainer a few times a week and find that i am in better shape now that i am working out on my own-leaner to-go figure
  • I picked the home video answer because lately that's all I really do.  But even that is totally sporadic and I haven't done a thing in weeks.  I really want to start going to the gym again and doing my prenatal yoga dvd regularly so that recovering from pregnancy won't be as difficult.  But when we got back from London I came down with a sinus infection and I'm still getting over it.  It makes it hurt to breathe hard, or at all!  Boo.

When DH & I first met, I was working out like crazy, going to the gym 5-6 days a week.  Over the years it has decreased to the point that I go maybe 2-3/month!  So sad.  BUT, weirdly, I lost weight.  I lost all my muscle!  Pre-pg I weighed about 9 lbs less than when we first started dating.  Go figure.
