When is it to late to have a housewarming party?

I wanted to throw a housewarming party but am wondering if its to late now. DH and I closed on our house June 30th but didn't move until the end of July because we were doing so much work on the house. We now have almost all our projects complete except for the main bath (which needs wallpaper taken down) and some decorating. We are planning on doing the bath over our winter break from work since we'll have a week off. I would prefer to have the bath done before we do the party but that would put us having it in January. Is that to far from when we've moved? I would do it sooner but with the PSU football schedule it takes away a lot of weekends and then its the holidays. Would you still do it in January?

Re: When is it to late to have a housewarming party?

  • I think anything over a year is too late, so you should be fine.

Friends of my parents had a "bathroom warming" party because they had their bathroom redone and loved the results so they threw a party, haha.

  • We don't own a home, so I don't really know the specific etiquette, but I know if I were invited to to a housewarming that was in January after a July move-in, I wouldn't even think twice about it.  I think it's about celebrating your family in your home, so whenever you are ready to "unveil" your hard work is fine.

  • We closed in April and threw one the end of July because we were too busy painting and getting the house the way we wanted it first.  I would agree that over a year is too long.  You should be fine, especially since you were working on it and then unpacking.
  • I was wondering the same thing too.. because DH and I bought our house the end of August last year, we did work on it a solid year and didnt move our things there until a few weeks before the wedding, and didnt start living there til the night of the wedding.. so we've still been organizing and decorating since.. and we've been thinking about having a housewarming party/open house for everyone to see what all we have done.. but I figured whenever it is isnt a big deal, since everyone knows how much time it took us and that we are still finishing some things up.  I wouldnt worry about it too much, as Im not either. Im thinking we might wait until after the New Year to have one once the holidays have passed and we know we pretty much have everything settled.

  • We bought a house over the summer too.. but it needs a lot of "fixin' up"... so we're not having a housewarming party any time soon.  People have "open houses" when they do remodeling so I don't think it's ever too late.
