I think MIL is frustrated by twins

My MIL is a sweet woman, but very much the "I know best" kind. I think twins have kind of thrown her off, because suddenly she can't be the expert in pregnancy and babies that she could have been (or rather, could have seen herself as lol) if we were having a singleton, and that it might even be annoying her that I know more about twins than she does. For example, we just had the following conversation:

MIL: So are you going to find out the sexes?
Me: Yup, as soon as we can!
MIL: What do you think they'll be?
Me: Well, I think it will be two boys, but Ben thinks it will be two girls.
MIL: Oh well, either way one of you will be right! Well, unless it's a boy AND a girl.
Me: It could be, but only if they're not identical after all.
MIL: Oh you never know, I had a friend who had twins, and SHE had a boy and a girl!
Me: Well sure, but it sounds like hers were fraternal and ours are identical. So ours will be the same thing.
MIL: (pause) But my FRIEND had one of each, so you never know.
Me: Umm...well, I'm pretty sure they'll be the same if they're identical.
MIL: How do you even know they're identical? *I* can't tell.
Me: On the ultrasound picture, it's a little awkward but you can see that they're in the same sac. This can happen with non-identical twins, but it's extremely rare, so the odds are that they're identical.
MIL: Well *I* can't see that in the picture. I don't see how your doctor can see that if *I* can't see it.
Me: Umm...that's just one photo, and we were there with the ultrasound tech and clearly saw that they were in the same sac.
MIL: Well it doesn't look like it in the photo, so I don't know how you can be sure.
Me: *headdesk*

*sigh* I think MIL is having a difficult time with not being able to be the bringer of knowledge in this situation...

LOL I think it's funny that her reputation has lasted this long - I suppose that says something about my stories involving her from those days, eh? Stick out tongue

    +me.

You must have a lot of patience!

  • I just hope the twins' birthday doesn't fall anywhere close to a day that's important to her.  Two occasions and two names on a shared cake, I can let go with a little bit of reluctance, but three?  Hell no.  Stick out tongue

I don't think it will - is it pathetic that I actually looked at this when I calculated the due date? Ridiculous I know! They're due May 3, which means they'll probably actually be born sometime in early to mid April (possibly even the last week of March, but I'm hoping they'll hold on just a little bit longer).

I think the only significant date around then is FIL's brother's birthday...otherwise, the only potential important date would be Ben's due date - he was born on May 19, about three weeks late, so if they actually go full term, they'd be close to his original EDD. So here's hoping we can avoid either of those days lol!

Three weeks late??  Holy moly.  Maybe we ought to cut your MIL some slack just for that.......maybe, I said.  Stick out tongue

LOL yeah, she said he was red like a lobster by the time he came out. Stick out tongue I don't know how often doctors induced back then, but even these days Aussie docs aren't fond of doing it - I have a friend who was 2 weeks overdue in the dead heat of summer, and she had to BEG her doctor for an induction.

LOL I just love this comment... if we all knew as much as doctors did then we wouldn't need doctors!!!

  • Yes, you have tons of patience.  wow.

And you'll need it with twins! (my younger brothers are twins)

LOL yeah that was pretty much the point at which I gave up - when she said that, I realized that there was NOTHING I could say that would change her mind!

You are smart. I'm learning that from my H. Prior to him, I always tried to help people understand. If only I could explain it better; then, they would get it. Um, no. There are people who live in their own mind. I struggled with them for a while. Then, I noticed that my H had a special magic. He just says, "You're probably right". It's amazing. It's like a magic spell that stops their annoying conversation.

LOL he must know my MIL! I swear, "Yeah, that's probably right" is my mantra when we have conversations. Stick out tongue Honestly, it's just 100x easier than trying to argue with her for an hour, even when I KNOW I'm right, or KNOW that I'm just giving her lip service and am promptly going to go about doing things the way that I want to do them. Amusingly, she never really seems to follow up to these conversations - clearly, just hearing "you're right" is all she wants.

  • Ugh! Just reading that conversation had me annoyed. Bless you. :o)
  • LOL at that convo!!!!!! Your MIL is a piece of work!!!!!!

Oh man, that's frustrating!  I'd be tempted to ask her if she's ever gone to med school.  Hahahaha...

    How are you feeling?

Pretty good - the nausea has started to fade (3 days with no sick feeling now, WOOHOO!) so that's awesome. But now my springtime allergies are kicking up, which pretty much blows since I can't take any good meds. Oh well!

  • Maybe she doesn't really understand the biological differences between identical and fraternal twins.  I have twin nieces (fraternal) and remember being very confused by all of it when they were born... although I was 10 at the time.  But anyway, it sounds like she is trying to be a know-it-all without really knowing much of anything... scientifically, that is.  And maybe the poor lady doesn't even have a clue as to how clueless she really is.
