CA Nestie has some travel questions...
I am considering having the family take a trip to Hawaii this next summer. Now, DH and I have been to Kauai, but this time, want to take the kids with us. We have a 13 year old, 10 year old, and our little one will be almost 1 when we want to go. I have some questions to get me in the right direction for planning, and would appreciate your help:
1. Which island would you recommend for a family?
2. Would you recommend staying at a hotel, or rent a place instead?
3. Any other suggestions or recommendations that you have would be great!
TIA
Susan
Re: CA Nestie has some travel questions...
Oooh, lucky you! I don't live in HI but have been to Oahu and Kauai. I can't answer your questions but will just share my 2 cents
1. Can't really answer since I've only been to 2 of the islands but they all seem to have something for everyone. Do you not want to go to Kauai again?
Oahu (and I'm only saying this because that's the only other island I've been to) has some great stuff for kids. I went there first when I was in grade 4 and had a blast driving around the island, going to the Dole plantation, going to a luau, snorkeling, and swimming at the beach and at the pool of the condo we were renting.
2. IMO, I like renting places because I like to save $ and eat healthier by preparing some of our meals rather than eating out all the time. Not sure if this might be easier for you if you need to prep food for your 1 yr old?
I know the other Nesties here will have some very helpful info but it might help to know what kind of activities do you enjoy doing as a family. What do your older kids like to do?
1. I would suggest Oahu because there's lots of kid oriented stuff to do and your older ones could take surf lessons if they want. I love Big Island and there's tons of stuff to do but I'm not sure a kid would love it. There's a lot of walking/hiking to do there.
2. We always like staying at vacation rentals because we hate eating out for every meal. It's cheaper to cook some meals in and then eat out when you want. You have more of a selection this way. We NEVER eat breakfast out because it's easy to do eggs or cereal at a vacation rental. We tend to find lunch specials and do that or do dinner out if there's some place we really want to try.
3. Bring stuff for your kids to do on the plane and snacks! It's a LONG flight from most places and the food they serve is usually not that great. If you want suggestions on stuff to do on Oahu let me know!
1. Oahu is definitely family-friendly with tons of attractions and sights that everyone of all ages can enjoy. There's the zoo, aquarium, museums, water park, and even a really cool children's discovery center that's really hands on and interactive.
2. I'd suggest getting either a two bedroom condo or small home if it's in your budget. I think the whole family will appreciate the extra space and you'll have the convenience of having your own kitchen to cook some of your own meals.
