It's sad that I am so excited about this

I just booked plane tickets for me and DH to go back to Cali to spend Thanksgiving with his family - round trip for both of us on Virgin America came out to $1,004.

I am so excited because we were previously getting quotes from $1,800-$2,400......

At least we are flying direct and I <3 Virgin.  And we ended up staying an extra day because it was about $700 cheaper to leave on Monday instead of Sunday. Tongue Tied But seriously, that is damn expensive.

  • Did you book with their $100 airfare sale?? I'm sure you did, because that sounds about right. but yay for family holidays!!

    From travelzoo:

Fares from New York City were
just slashed to $100 each way in a new sale from Virgin
America. Ticket prices are now up to $100 less than other
    airlines' roundtrip fares.

The sale is valid for midweek departures through March 10,
    2010. Book by Oct. 27.

Fly from JFK (each way) for $100 to:
    - Las Vegas
    - Los Angeles
    - Orange County
    - San Diego
    - San Francisco
    - Seattle

Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday flights are $100. Friday,
Sunday and Monday flights are $20 more each way.

Virgin America's upscale in-flight experience has earned it
the title of "Best Domestic Airline" by Conde Nast Traveler
and Travel + Leisure magazines. The airline has free WiFi
on all flights November 10 through January 15.

  • Well, I tried to do that - my friend sent me that email and I clicked through that link....but the cheapest flight going to SFO was $184, and coming home was $222.  Not sure where the $100 fares were, but they didn't show up for me!!

Oh, and when I was booking, I got to the part where you pick your seats, and there were only 6 seats left on the plane - all of them with extra leg room.  So, I clicked on those and it said "Congratulations! For an  additional $468 you can get extra legroom!" WHAT? For an extra few inches you want me to pay almost $500 more??

I called them and they said to just not select a seat, and then get there early and ask to be put in the exit row - and I should get my leg room for free! That's the way it should be, dammit!

  • I hear ya on good travel deals!! Woo hoo!! It is never cheap for DH and i to fly to NM to visit my family, especially around the holidays. So we're not doing it this year. Plus, i'm just tired of all the holiday rush/traffic!!

But i got us $88/total round trip bus tix to go to NH for Thanksgiving!! Can't beat that!

  • for me, that is getting into international flight range. for $700 less, i think it's worth staying an extra day.

i think my mom & gram are going to florida for christmas and i just told my mom we will definitely not be joining them as $900 for 3.5 days in florida is not only waaay more than i WANT to spend, it's more than we spend on getting to/from massachusetts at christmas and all our gifts - each other, our friends, both sets of family, and co-workers! sorry mom & gram, not happening.?

having lived away from my family since college, i am more than a little tired of traveling every christmas. the only reason thanksgiving isn't an issue is b/c DH & claimed it for ourselves the first year we were dating. sorry that turned into a mini rant!

  • cheeky: I totally get you're feelings on the florida travels! That's cool that you claimed thanksgiving as your own (I'm assuming you mean you stay local just you two). DH and I did that one year - and we had amazing food together. We toy with the idea every once in awhile, but only did it once.

I also just booked all of our holiday travel. But this year I decided we're doing all rental cars. That way we can bring the dog (and not pay $100 for her plane ticket!!) and it takes about the same amount of time as flying or train to our destinations. Between now and New Years, we're renting cars 4 weekends and the total is going to be about $1200 for all of those rentals. Not too bad - and I think its definitely better than if we were flying.

  • yes, we usually stay local. like don't get out of pjs local ;) ?sometimes we travel too, just not with family ;) we went to dublin with my two best friends for my 30th birthday (it was on thanksgiving that year) and this year we're heading to d.c. early thanksging morning to spend the day with my bff & her fam in VA and then the weekend scouting neighborhoods in d.c. my mother is not too pleased about that but she didn't tell me about the florida plans until after i'd scored a hotel deal on hotwire (non-refundable!) so there was no switching holidays at that point.?

i think the rental car for four weekends sounds like a good plan. you can go when you want to go, bring your pup, and not have to deal with airports. do your traveling this year so that next year you won't have to feel bad if you, DH, and baby L want to spend the holidays at home. ?

  • Oh, I can't WAIT till we have a baby - then at least for the first two years I will say "we are staying HOME for the holidays.  If you want to see us, come to us!"

good for you! even before we decided we probably don't want a baby cheeky, we already discussed that if we had kids there would be no holiday travels.?

  • I was kind of spoiled last year.  My mom came down and we ate T-Day dinner out.  It was great.  Especially not having to clean up.

This year, I am flying to my sister's.  Prices were steep, but she lives in a out-of-the-way place.

  • YAY for an awesome price! =)
