We're excited (and scared!) too! The plan was to wait until AFTER our manatee trip in December but I think this little one had his/her own schedule in mind.
We're still planning on going but I'm not sure if I'll be able to fit into my wetsuit. It should make for one interesting adventure!
Will we be seeing you again in Hawaii next spring? I hope so!
You're such a tiny thing that I'd be surprised if you didn't have room to spare in your wetsuit. Your manatee trips sound like an incredible adventure and you always come away with the most amazing photos. I'm jealous - of your trip and your talent.
I was hoping to take a quick trip to Hawaii after Christmas, but prices are super expensive. Tickets from San Francisco were nearly $1000. Yikes! Could you work your magic and bring them down a bit? I could use a dose of paradise.
John's been watching ticket prices like a hawk and told me yesterday that tickets to Florida went way down so that we should book our tickets now. A few months ago, they were over $1000 per person! Now he said they were less than $600. Maybe ticket prices to Hawaii will go down too? The only thing is that prices get expensive after Christmas too because it's another peak travel time, especially for Japanese. My aunt and uncle from Japan would always try to fly in after New Year's. When you say 'after Christmas', how soon after Christmas are you talking about? I hope you get to come out here! It's always kind of funny seeing Christmas decorations over here because there's no snow and it's nowhere even close to chilly but I just love the whole month of December because it's the only month where it feels like we get to celebrate a holiday for more than just one day.
We loooove the manatees. If you and Keith ever get a chance to take a vacation during the winter, I'd soooo recommend Crystal River! Florida isn't that far away from DC and even if you could do a trip over a 3-day weekend or something, you would have so much fun! It's amazing to hear the babies squeaking in the water too.
It's always such a relaxing trip for us. We get up early in the morning, go to the kayak rental place, spend a few hours with the manatees in the water, and then have a lazy afternoon after eating lunch. It's a small town but it's got charm. We really love going there!
There was recently a news article about a Florida manatee named Ilya who was stranded up near a power plant in New Jersey. They had plans to rescue him but because of the storm that hit last weekend, they had to postpone them. They last saw him on Friday afternoon and haven't seen him since. I'm hoping he was able to get out with the high tide and is back on his way down south to warmer waters.
As much as I love the holiday, it's crazy that stores are already stocking up for Christmas. Our errands took us to Target on Saturday and there were Christmas cards a couple of aisles down from the Halloween costumes. No wonder I keep thinking it's later in the year that it is.
Keith and I spend Christmas in the Bay Area and will normally stick around to celebrate New Year's with our friends. But, since we added two babies to our friend family this year, I don't think New Year's will be the same - especially since the two couples that had babies are the two that normally host the festivities. So, Keith and I were thinking of taking a trip during the week between Christmas and New Year's which is, as you said, one of the busiest travel times of the year. Maybe I should look into Crystal River. It sounds really fun! We caught a glimpse of two manatees while snorkeling in Belize and it was a very cool experience. They were like sea teddy bears, cuddly and playful.
I read that Ilya found his way into New York harbor. I hope that he was able to make it to warmer waters before the winter storm arrived.
