Anyone an insurance expert?? or at least some advice?

DH and I are both uninsured. Neither of our jobs provide insurance (yaay, us! :( ) DH and I would like to get insurance for me and make sure that it covers maternity. So far, everything I have found online is crazy expensive like $500-600 per month. I was reading something about "maternity insurance" but the articles I found were not very clear. Can you just buy insurance for maternity only? Anyone know any reasonably priced companies?

 TIA

Re: Anyone an insurance expert?? or at least some advice?

  • I would look into the state's coverage for maternity/ called healthy start (?).  It covers you through the pregnancy and postpartum stuff, and covers a baby for several years.

I'm not sure what the requirements are... all I know is my SIL used it.

  • I don't know too much about insurance, so I can't help you. Sorry. But I just wanted to suggest that you post on the money matters board. There are a lot of intelligent, well-informed ladies on that board and they seem to know a lot about everything!
  • I pay for my insurance out of pocket, and unfortunately you cant get maternity coverage only.  Whatever insurance you decide to go through, you have to add maternity coverage BEFORE you get PG-just FYI, otherwise they wont cover you at all, and you could get dropped.  It's insanely expensive, so I cant recommend my insurance...Im hoping one of us finds a job soon that gives us health insurance asap!
  • Thanks for all the advice ladies. I know that its important to have health insurance. And I would jump all over it if I could, I'm hoping that something woks out and one of us can get insurance through work. But, until that happens we just want to be covered in some way, just in case. Ya know?!?!
  • Some of the policies that cover maternity require you to be covered for over 9 months before they'll pay-so if you get pregnant one month after signing up you won't get coverage.  Could you choose something with a super high deductable, sort of a catastrophic policy to save you from financial troubles if you do get pregnant?  Honestly I would probably look at getting a Mirena, the shot, or other longer term/hopefuly less fool-proof birth control method and skipping the maternity coverage.  But that's just me and I know not everyone would go for that option.

  • Try www.hcfor1.com  It is a site where you can submit information about what you are looking for and it will "shop" all of the major medical carriers for you.  It will really help you choose the most competitive plan.  With that being said, you may want to consider a "high deductible" (sometimes called major medical) plan.  Basically, all expenses are out of pocket until you hit your deductible (usually 5,000 to qualify as a HD/ MM plan), but then everything is covered at 100%.  Not ideal, but if something were to happen, it would save you a lot.  Also, there are programs avaible, esp for children (do not know if they cover pregnancy but I would think they have to) where insurance is provided given that neither parent qualifies for insurance and/or makes 2x the poverty level for the number of people you have in your household.  I know their is a website for this as well, but can't remember it off of the top of my head.  I can get it for you in the next few days, though.

Also, if eligible, you may want to look into COBRA.  The current admin. has revamped it and it is much more affordable for individuals than it used to be.  If you are in a situation where you could have been eligible and the employer never shared the information with you, you definitely have ground to join now (in the least).
