Anyone an insurance expert?? or at least some advice?
DH and I are both uninsured. Neither of our jobs provide insurance (yaay, us!
) DH and I would like to get insurance for me and make sure that it covers maternity. So far, everything I have found online is crazy expensive like $500-600 per month. I was reading something about "maternity insurance" but the articles I found were not very clear. Can you just buy insurance for maternity only? Anyone know any reasonably priced companies?
TIA
Re: Anyone an insurance expert?? or at least some advice?
I would look into the state's coverage for maternity/ called healthy start (?). It covers you through the pregnancy and postpartum stuff, and covers a baby for several years.
I'm not sure what the requirements are... all I know is my SIL used it.
Try www.hcfor1.com It is a site where you can submit information about what you are looking for and it will "shop" all of the major medical carriers for you. It will really help you choose the most competitive plan. With that being said, you may want to consider a "high deductible" (sometimes called major medical) plan. Basically, all expenses are out of pocket until you hit your deductible (usually 5,000 to qualify as a HD/ MM plan), but then everything is covered at 100%. Not ideal, but if something were to happen, it would save you a lot. Also, there are programs avaible, esp for children (do not know if they cover pregnancy but I would think they have to) where insurance is provided given that neither parent qualifies for insurance and/or makes 2x the poverty level for the number of people you have in your household. I know their is a website for this as well, but can't remember it off of the top of my head. I can get it for you in the next few days, though.
Also, if eligible, you may want to look into COBRA. The current admin. has revamped it and it is much more affordable for individuals than it used to be. If you are in a situation where you could have been eligible and the employer never shared the information with you, you definitely have ground to join now (in the least).
