WWYD

We can not get a hold of Ben's doctor. It has been weeks that we have been calling and we get her answering machine and it says it is full so we can not even leave a message. As a result he has not had his 2 month appointment (including shots).

At what point would you give up and use the walk-in clinic until you can find another doctor? We have called a few other doctors and oddly enough had the same issue with their answering machines. The one's that did answer are not accepting new clients.

Re: WWYD

  • Do you have a separate family doctor?  Maybe that doctor would see him?  Or maybe you or Joe could go down in person and see whats going on?  I think I would go to the walk in when my DC was 3 months.  You don't want to get behind on shots.  My son will be 16 months before he gets to his 15 months appointment because of scheduling issues...I know its not a huge deal, but a week here, a week there adds up.

    Good luck!

  • We actually do not have a family doctor. We have not been able to find one since we moved here. In order to have a first appointment there has to be something wrong with you and when we do find one that is accepting new patients there is never anything wrong with us. It is ridiculous.

Ben's doctor is the pedi who was responsible for his care at the hospital (care was transferred from the MW at birth due to what they thought was breathing issues - turned out it was nothing). She takes on babies who would not normally see a pedi but do not have a family doctor.

Even for his circumcision it took us months to find a doctor who had spots available. I don't know what it is about this town.

  • Can you call Drs in your area and explain the situation? Surely the needs of an infant would be important enough for them to take him on. DO you have any friends or family in the area that could rec. a pediatrician or GP for him?

    How frustrating for you!

  • I would definitely start calling around, hopefully you find a doc that will accept him as a patient!! A baby without special health concerns shouldn't take a lot of time out of the practice, most GP's are worried about the load of an older person who has more health concerns.
  • Hmmm. ?I would drop by and make the appt. in person, and if you can't go to a walk-in clinic. ?They maybe be able to refer you to someone accepting pediatric patients.

  • Can you go on some sort of waiting list?  My parent's office has a number you can call to get on one I believe.  They are in Cambridge.  I think that you would be close enough geographically to qualify for that group of doctors.  I will ask my mom next time I talk to her and find out.

  • That would be fantastic if you could ask her for me. I would really appreciate it.

I know there is a waiting list at Cambridge Memorial that you can get on but you have to live in Cambridge to get onto it since we live in Kitchener we don't qualify. Ugh.

  • Ask your pharmacist if they know of any doctors accepting new patients. They may not, but they may be able to direct you to at least the most likely places to look and guide you away from the crappy doctors.
  • Ifound a list of dr accepting new patients.  Mind you i dont know how old it is.

I had this problem a few months ago (my dr retired).  YOu just have to call around until someone will agree to see you

    Good luck!

  • Wow, that's crazy! I'd be so annoyed. I guess I would stop by in person, as pp suggested, to see what's going on. That should help you make your decision. But if you can't get in at your doctor's office, and you can't find a new one, I guess you have no choice but to go to a walk-in clinic.

  • Have you tried the doctor search on the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario website?

  • I'd try the list that the pp's suggested but in the meanwhile, I'd go in person to Ben's doc's office and make the appointment that way, mentioning that your calls have not been returned and he is overdue for vaccinations.

That is so annoying and you deserve extra care... I'd schedule the shots with his pedi and then seek a better doctor through the list

Sorry you're having trouble. That would be so frustrating!!!

  • I agree, I would start calling around too and see what you can find out or if there is someone else you can go to. You don't want to get behind on the shots that's for sure. What a pain in the butt, and I can imagine how frustrating it is!! I really hope you're able to find something soon!

Yep we have tried it. You wouldn't believe how outdated the information is.

His doctor is at the hospital so I don't even know how to get to her. I am going to call the MW tomorrow and ask if they know what is going on. They forwarded his file to her so if something has happened we will need to get his file to take elsewhere anyways.

  • Try the Elmira Medical clinic.  I don't know if they're accepting new patients but it's worth a try, and it's not that far away from  you.  My doctor was Dr. Norris and he's awesome, super nice and very approachable.  Ben will love him when he gets older.
