Lesley & Jess: rice cereal

S/O rice cereal:

Does most of it end up on your LO's bib/all over them, or are they actually eating it?! Brooke still does the tongue thrust thing, so most of it is on her bib. . . not even sure how much she is actually taking in. Please tell me I'm not the only one! (Or tell me it gets better-- I've only been feeding her rice cereal for 6 days)

Also, s/o taking bottles:

Jess, I know you nurse Wai, so I'm curious if she takes to the bottle b/c Brooke does NOT and it is stressing me out a wee bit. It's kind of late for her to take the bottle already (I've been trying to get her to take for awhile now), so I'm thinking of just introducing sippy cups. Any advice or experiences?

  • :butting in:

I introduced the bottle early, probably at 3 weeks and had no problems.  My biggest mistake was that I got lazy and didn't offer the bottle daily so my DD ended up refusing it.  It stressed me out b/c I had to go back to work an I tried offering her the bottle for months with no luck.  I'm lucky b/c my DCP worked with her and she's been there for almost a month and will take the bottle if she's hungry enough.  I also debated on whether or not to just transition her to a sippy or push the bottle.  In the end I decided to stick with the bottle b/c I didn't want to buy more/different sippys to find one she would take.

  • Oh don't worry sweetie, Jaylee is the same way. We just started on Thursday so we've been doing it at long as you have. It's pretty runny and Jaylee gets most on her bib, DH kinda shoves (nicely) the spoon further back so she can take as much food in as she can. But I hear she's prety good at the baby sitter. No mess at all. I guess it's more of the new mommy and daddy getting used to feeding her.

I nurse Jaylee when I am not at work. I also started giving her the bottle at 4 weeks. It was pretty hard there for awhile. I would say just stay consistant about the bottle, try for a while longer. Have your DH introduce it and if all else fails I am told that you can usually start a sippy cup at the point where she can sit unassisted usually around 6 months.

  • Wai is actually eating her food now, but it's totally normal for most of it not to make it in their mouth when they start. My doctor said that it's mostly just for practice in the beginning.

As far as the bottle goes, Wai wouldn't take one until she was 3 months. Now she loves drinking out of a bottle which is nice because I can pump and go to work (I sub at a preschool). We have tried a sippy cup, but she mostly just plays with it. If Brooke takes to the sippy cup that would be great! No need to fuss with a bottle at all in that case. Good luck!
