So, this loon who held up the WCB in Edmonton...
What's his "issue"? Did he have a beef with the WCB or is he just a whackjob? I read online that he held 9 people at gunpoint?! His ex apparently has a restarining order against him and claims that he is a drug abuser...but I can't figure out what possessed him to pick WCB. Anyone?
Re: So, this loon who held up the WCB in Edmonton...
According to a WCB official he was a claimant.
According to someone who works there picketers are common, so there are a number of people who have issues with them. I'm not surprised, you're dealing with people in difficult situations.
From calgary.ctv.ca, no way to know if this was actually from the hostage taker or not:
CTV News received an e-mail earlier in the afternoon from a man who claimed to be the hostage taker. In the note, he claims he was injured by a doctor during a medical procedure and that he's been fighting to get a claim for the damage.
He wrote: "...Dealing with this for the last 5 years and have been heavily medicated (with) narcotics, painkillers and anti-inflammatories. Upon telling WCB caseworkers and supervisors about the doctor ripping my knee, I was told that I was a liar... Been fighting back and forth with WCB to give fairness one way or another with my mistreatment and was treated like s--t. They cut me off medications (and) had to resort to street drugs."
So what was reported in some of the papers, that I think is worth mentioning is that this same guy held up traffic for four hours two months ago on one of Edmonton's major roads because he was threatening to jump off a bridge and kill himself because he was so distraught over his wife leaving him.
Wife leaves = public suicide attempt
Perceived unfair treatment = hostage taking
I think maybe someone has a problem with appropriate reactions.
Unfortunately, WCB doesn't always have a very good reputation in our city. Over the years I've come across several people who have been fighting for their claims for over 2-3 yrs.
I'll never have that problem b/c in my field, the government says that dental assistants do not qualify for mandatory WCB coverage. I guess they figure that tripping over suction hoses, lifting heavy supply boxes everyday and carple tunnel syndrome(to list a few) don't count as possible career injuries.
This really pissed me off last year so now I am working with my association and WCB to lobby the government to change the laws and recognize our feild as needing WCB coverage too. Hopefully in the next 1-2 years will will manage to finalize this.
I had assumed he was being treated for a work related injury and he feels the doctor screwed up and made it worse. I'm just going to hope it's one of those things I pay into but never need.
I didn't even think about it from that perspective. That totally makes sense!
That's crazy! I sure hope that you're able to negotiate some sort of coverage.
