Xmas: help me shop

Hi,

this year I am not getting a bonus or a raise and $ wise we are really trying to save as much as possible since we are not doing so well.

I need to buy 3 gifts (similar or equal in price) for my dh aunts and cousin.

The 2 aunts are married with grown up children and are 2 sisters in their 70. They no longer decorate for the holidays, have pretty much everything that it is need it in the house. Plus I never saw them using the sofa throws that I gave them, or the wine opener or any cute gadget I may came up with. Not even the frame with my dd pic in it. For these 2 couples we are planning to spend $40~ but I need all the suggestions I can get bc I am running out of ideas.

The other gift is for dh's cousin. A cousin that recently moved here and that we do not hear or call. They are newlyweds and very solitary people. I never been to their house so I was thinking may be a xmas ornament for $20-30? WDYT?

TIA

Re: Xmas: help me shop

  • Why not simply send cards for the aunts and a card with a cute outfit for the cousin?  After all, it's the thought that counts.
  • For the recently married couple, why not check their registry to see if there's anything in your price range to get them?

What about a few nice fluffy towels for the other people?  Everyone loves new towels.

  • I like the towels idea....or specialty food items.
  • For the 2 older couples who don't use the gifts you've given them, what about buying them something they can use for a hobby or a bottle of wine.

Just my opinion, buf if they don't use what you give them, don't spend that much money on them. It's too much to spend on people who won't use the gifts you already give them.

For the newlyweds, get them something from their registry that isn't yet purchased, or a nice "first Christmas" ornament or "first home" ornament. If they're not really outgoing, a bottle of wine or a board game for two (Othello, Boggle, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Sequence....) might be nice.

  • Why not purchase gift cards for them, all of them! $ 20- $30 is a completely generous amount. You can get the couple a gift card to one of the stores they were registered with, so they can purchase what they want. or if you have an idea of their interests, crafts, cooking, sports etc. every little shop has gift cards these days. i know it sounds impersonal, with this personal touch, it's not so. and the gift will be put to good use.

gift cards to www.amazon.com~ I just received one as a wedding gift.  they can have fun and buy anything. Oh but they might not be on line.

who doesn't love Target, Trader Joes(location?)~ or grocery store shopping.

or a magazine subscription? "Body & Soul" is one which my mom & grandma enjoy reading and stealing off my coffee table.

    movie tickets,

    All you need is love...
  • If you're strapped for cash how about making a bunch of goodies and putting them in a box or basket. I do something similar every year - for instance last year I did batches of homemade pancake mix and put it in a box with local maple syrup - it was a huge hit.
