Anyone know of/go to West Shore SD/Red Land?
We are seriously looking at a house in Lewisberry and I'm wondering about this school district, don't know anything about it! TIA!
Re: Anyone know of/go to West Shore SD/Red Land?
I don't, but you might want to check out this website... http://www.schoolmatters.com/
I know I used it a lot when I was interviewing for jobs to find out info about the districts.
It's a good district. I went there as a kid, and just moved to a house specifically so my kids would go to this district. It has its good and not so good schools (some of the middle schools are not so desirable), but all in all, it's decent. On the West Shore, it probably doesn't have as good a reputation as Cumberland Valley...but Cumberland Valley is just massive in size compared to West Shore so there are pluses and minuses to that district as well.
Good luck if you decide to buy a house in Lewisberry! We'll almost be neighbors (I'm on the border of Lewisberry).
We moved here for the SD after we couldn't find anything in Lower Dauphin SD.
We don't have kids yet, but hopefully soon, and I've heard nothing but good things about the district.
Where in Lewisberry are you looking at? We just moved to Lewisberry
It's so nice and quiet!
I can chime in on this question...
My husband and I (and our siblings) graduated from West Shore School District/Red Land. We both had extremely positive experiences. We still connect with teachers that we see throughout Central PA. I found you can enjoy the benefits of a larger district, but between multiple middle schools and the two high schools there is ample opportunity to get involved in after-school activities and clubs. We were particularly involved in sports and both of us were able to play in college, so WSSD has a solid athetic program, but it's not overbearing like some other districts and students are encouraged to play more than one sport.
I felt the education was more than adequate with advanced AP classes and honors courses. Our immediate family that graduated from the district includes a lawyer, military officer, dentist, and veterinarian so the high school education spring boarded them into college and beyond.
The Etters/Lewisberry area has expanded over the last 20 years. It used to be ideal for dual working parents that had to split travel between York and Harrisburg since this area is equidistant Many people from the area also commute to Baltimore since it's an easier trip down 83 and you can afford a larger home in this area. Lewisberry in particular has been growing with many newer homes being built. The areas near Cedar Cliff have already been built-up and established so the growth has been steady in the Red Land Area. Crime is relatively low with no known major crime issues that I'm aware of. If you live in this area you do have to be prepared to travel 15 minutes on average to get to the grocery store, go out to eat and to the movies. But, you trade that drive for a little more peace and quiet.
One negative is that the area is not culturally diverse. That may be indicative of living in Central PA, but it's worth noting.
My husband and I moved back to the area after our schooling and we look forward to sending our kids to this district. As for Red Land, we personally know many of the teachers whom we either had as students or were once our peers and have returned to teach. I think the return of former students demonstrates how invested some teachers are to this community.
