Does anyone belong to LA Fitness?

I've been thinking of joining LA fitness a lot recently.  They have great classes and good hours.  I received a mailer today with a special of $29.99 a month and $149 initiation fee.  For anyone that belongs to their club, is that normal?  I know that there's going to be an initiation fee, but I don't know if goes lower any other time of year.  I also figure that the monthly due will go up if I want to go to another club.  Thanks!

Re: Does anyone belong to LA Fitness?

  • Go in and talk to them. The sales people work off of comission -so make a "deal" with them. You can knock some of that "initiation fee" off.

The one thing I did NOT like about LA fitness was that when you cancelled you have to give a 90 day notice -- so you had pay for the next 3 months. I go to Planet Fitness in Cherry Hill and pay $10 month, no contract. I can quit whenever I want or stay as long as I want and the price doesn't go up. BUT, there's no classes -- just machines.

I have also used Lucille Roberts in Deptford -- great classes, but few machines, so it's hard to get on a machine during peak hours. There was no sign up fee when I joined and no 90 day notice crap either. And it was women only, which I really enjoyed.

  • I go to LA Fitness in Mt. Laurel and I like it.  I would go somewhere else, but not many gyms have the amount of space that this one has (aerobics room, spinning room) to work out in when there aren't classes.

At peak hours it can get a little crowded but there are usually plenty of machines.  It's always horrible right after new year's, but I think that's the same at any gym.

My H used to work there and he said that he thought it was 30 day notice before canceling, but maybe it changed.

I agree with previous poster that you should go in and talk to them.  They were able to waive my initiation fee, but that could have had something to do with the fact that we knew the guy.  The $29.99 is probably only for clubs in the area or just NJ.  I think it's $37.99 to have access to all clubs in the US.

  • $149 up front in cheap for LA Fitness...I know people who paid $300 up front.  They do have a 90 day cancellation policy and it's a pain in the ass to do.  You can't just cancel at the gym you have to write a letter and mail it in...atleast that's how they did it when I was there.

I use to belong to the one in Turnersville but hated it, ther equipment was ALWAYS broken and doing weights was nuts b/c all the machines you wanted to use were filled up.  They were suppose to be upgrading there stuff but the people I know who go there said they have yet too

  • I used to belong and paid $29.99/month.  I actually signed up under my friend's membership and paid no initiation fee.  I just cancelled my membership and it was really easy.  I printed a form out online, put my name and membership number on it and mailed it in.  It was a 30 day cancellation policy.  I liked the one near me and never had trouble getting a machine however; I cancelled my membership because I have a treadmill, weights and other stuff at home so it just wasn't worth it for me to keep paying to go there.
  • My husband looked into LA fitness but didnt sign up bc he felt the price was steep and they wouldn't budge.

We both belong to Planet Fitness and love it. We pay only $10 a month and like pp said, you can cancel at any time.  There are no classes but it has everything we both need in a gym.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I really like la fitness because they have a lot of classes and I like doing classes more than machines. I'm also considering future fitness in cherry hill because they have a good class and no intiation fee.
