*Hawkilady* and other recipe gurus

We're having a group over tomorrow evening for a pumpkin carving contest/get together. We have a friend's dance competition to go to ahead of time, so the group won't get back to our house until around 9:00 or so.

I want to serve a few snacks (that I can make ahead of time), but nothing too crazy. I have two bottles of Hot Lips wine that I plan to make and serve (it's awesome! It's sort of a red wine meets spiced cider drink that you do in the crock pot...yum!). Any suggestions on a few munchies?

  • I stopped reading at the UA in the subject.

  • Here's my appetizer tag in my blog... the Oktoberfest dip is really good and you can put it together in about 5 minutes and it goes well with your fall theme.  Serve it with pretzels and veggies.

You could also do empanadas or mini calzones -- put them together and put them in the freezer tonight or in the fridge in the morning and then just pull out and bake tomorrow night.  Super simple - just get refrigerated pie crust or pizza dough, roll out and cut into 3" circles, stuff them with a spoonful of whatever filling you like, brush with an egg wash for pie crusts or olive oil and sprinkle with parmesan for calzones and bake.

Pulled pork/chicken sandwiches would be super simple -- just put the meat in the crockpot in the morning and shred before the party.  Serve them on little cocktail buns.

    These stuffed mushrooms are great.

Crab dip is super simple too -- take a 1/2 pound crab meat, mix with 1 package cream cheese, 1/4 cup mayo, 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, and 1 small jar of roasted red peppers drained and chopped.  Serve it cold or bake for about 20 minutes until hot and bubbly.  Its great with toasted french bread or pita chips.

I'll keep thinking but those are the first things that occurred to me.

  • I usually make one of the following when I have people over and don't have much time and they can all be made ahead of time.

Cold Spinach dip, turkey pinwheels and veggies with dip.

Antipasto- Cheese, assorted meats, olives, etc.

Cheese balls, crackers, and fruit tray.

Guacamole, Salsa, 7 layer dip and chips.

  • A simple cheese/fruit platter would be great too, especially since you're short on time.

And you could do pumpkin dip since its a pumpkin carving party

  • Meatballs! On toothpicks!

    Buffalo cheese dip

  • Awesome! Thanks ladies!
  • We're doing the same thing tomorrow night, but just serving desserts. Among other things, I'm making the easiest/most delicious thing ever: white trash. Just combine golden grahams, pretzels, and melted white chocolate chips and let it harden.

That's a new one... are these good?  I've had bacon wrapped dates but not water chesnuts.

My mom used to make this and mix in butterscotch chips too.  yummmmm

  • Yeah, the bacon-wrapped chestnuts are good (and cheaper than scallops!). We made them for my BFF's bridal shower a few years ago. I'm sure you can pull up a super easy recipe. I usually hate the texture of water chestnuts, but you can put bacon on anything and it will be a winner!

lol... I'm definitely odd when it comes to food preferences... I don't like chocolate, peanut butter, bacon... I cook with all of the above, but the hubs has to be my taste tester as I dont like any of them.
